Need boxed hair dying recommendations
SO, I've been pushing this off, but now my greys are really starting to get noticeable. I cannot afford to do the salon thing, so can anybody recommend a decent boxed hair dye kit that I could use? I haven't dyed my hair since I was like 22. Its all natural and I'm low maintance (don't do much styling or anything). I don't want anything to strip or dry out my hair.
Also, since I'm an idiot, I think I just want something I can touch up my roots with every few months. I also want to keep my natural color.
Any tips, advice, help?
Thanks!

I always use either the Garnier Fructise or the Loreal Excellence.
They are both between $7 and $9 and you "shampoo" them in, so its pretty fool proof.
If you watch though, there are always coupons for them and then combine the coupons with like a CVS sale and you can color your hair for about $3.

Revlon Colorstay. Great coverage and it is so cheap. It is on sale in CVS for 2 for $5.00.

Re: Need boxed hair dying recommendations
just a warning from a colorist over here :) especially if trying to cover gray... nothing is "natural" or "temporary" if it covers gray.... just food for thought.... be careful you dont want to have to come to a salon and pay major color correction costs gl xoxo

Re: Need boxed hair dying recommendations
I would use Natural Instincts. That one washes away in about 6-8 weeks and it is gradual. Loving Care might be a temporary also. I am almost positive all the others are permanent so you will see root growth.
As far as prices as previous posters have said their are always coupons for various brands and the prices range from $7-9.
If you have long hair you might need 2 boxes.
I also would call around to some local salons and see how much a single process is. The salon I go to is on the pricey side but there single process is $40. I know when I was in NY a single process was around $30. I would also look into someone who does it out of there house or comes to you.
A friend of mine told me about someone who comes to the house and charges $45 for highlights. By me that is CHEAP.

I am a hairdresser and just wanted to offer you some advice. They names on the boxes of haircolor are very decieving. That is where people tend to go wrong when they color their own hair. They usually wind up too dark. If you want to post a pic of your hair, I can maybe give you some guidance as far as what color to choose, if you would like.

Re: Need boxed hair dying recommendations
I feel like I have used EVERY single boxed hair color there is. My personal favorites:
- I think L'Oreal Feria gives the best "results" in terms of shiny, somewhat dimensional color. I just really like their color selection
- However, for the best gray coverage and least amount of fading, I would say to try L'Oreal Excellence
- Natural Instincts makes my hair feel healthy and shiny, but I felt the gray coverage was really inadequate.
