There was a surprise party for my male cousin's 40th bday, too, but last year.
I was clueless, so we just gave a gift card.

i went to a cousin's 40th bday party last year and gave an expensive bottle of wine. can you do that or if not wine a bottle of booze? i guess it's only a good suggestion if he drinks!

we had a suprise 40th for my brother in law last year. he got a lot of gift cards which he really did love. i think gift cards are always a safe choice. if you can't think of a specific store, you can always get a amex or visa card.
is he into ebay? if so, i have seen some drugstores selling gift cards that you can use on ebay. take a trip to cvs, walgreens, etc. they usually have a big choice of cards
