Need advice re: marking territory
My 6 year old pug (joey) lives in my apartment with me, but in the past has lived at my mother's house. My mom has a 9 year old lab mix (buddy), a huge dumb dinosaur of a thing. When they were younger, they'd play a lot but now they're mostly lazy, so when Joey visits, Buddy lays around on his bed and Joey tries to get in everyone's business because its "new" and exciting.
I kind of think Joey thinks he's the alpha dog because EVERY time he visits mom's, he goes right to Buddy's bed and pees on it. Then he pees on the chairs right around the area of his bed. Its just a little bit, and he will do it after being outside for hours. He will do it ALL DAY long! I have NO idea how to stop it. Any help? TIA!

Re: Need advice re: marking territory
My guy is a big marker but fortunately I have not had this degree of a problem...yet. They sell male doggie belly bands which either may prevent him from peeing because it fits around his waist and/or at least contain it in the band. If the areas where he has gone haven't been very thorougly cleaned he will continue to mark them. You could also work on waiting for him to mark and then just as he lifts his leg correcting him to teach him not to do it. But please be sure to clean everything really well first. Is your dog fixed? Sometimes it doesn't matter if they are or they aren't but if he isn't neutering him might immediately stop the problem.

he is fixed. before he was neutered, he was marking my stove and fridge too!!
Its really hard to clean it so that its 100% gone. He does it on the same spot and every time we clean it with upholstry cleaner or steam clean the floors, he still comes back to the same spot. I plan on being very close to him this Saturday. thanks for your input.

Good Luck. I think trying to be on top of him and stopping him in the act might help change the behavior but it is going to be really really hard because the smell is still there. It's very difficult to break instinct. Good Luck again!!!

Re: Need advice re: marking territory
make sure the cleaner does not have amonia in it- that brings them back
get something like nature's miracle to get rid of the smell
i would also walk the dog on aleash around the area and use a water bottle or can of pennies if he tries
