Need Advice Please on Family Situation (long)

OK - long story short but need to put a lil background -

my dad's younger sister, my aunt, live in our town up here in NY with my uncle and younger cousins. As some of you know, we are up visiting for the summer. My aunt is the type of person who will never call you directly for plans - like holiday dinners, etc. but will always relay through her brother, my dad - which was annoying - we're all adults, we live in the same town, but whatever. We don't really have a relationship that we talk on the phone or anything - haven't heard from her once since we moved to Florida, but she is well aware that we were back up visiting. She had a big BBQ birthday for my cousin a few weeks back and my brother and sister went - we got no call, no invite. I had emailed my cousin D on facebook to wish him a happy birthday, no response - no response.

Anyhow, I see my aunt and cousin S last week at local church fair - they were walking by and did not see me - I ran after them yelling their names to get attn - had a very awkward convo - she was barely talking, I was doing all the talking - asking about the fam etc- no asking us how we were, how are new life in FL was, etc - no mention from her at all about getting together at all this summer, seeing fam, etc - even if it's fake, I feel like it's usually expected. 2 minute convo, they leave.

So I was talking to my dad the other day on phone and I mention that I saw his sister. He tells me yes, she mentioned it to him. I mention to him that I thought she was acting weird/rude. Not friendly, not conversational, etc. Now, my dad is the type to think I must have done something for her to act like thatChat Icon and has no problem telling me that - I tell him how I was not rude at all, how I went chasing after them, how I emailed my cousin and never got a response, blah blah blah.

So - the real point of this post, if you're still reading, is that my dad obviously goes and blabs his mouth to his sister- because I get a long message on my cell yesterday from her - telling me she had a bad headache when she saw me and sorry we didn't talk longer, had been feeling sick, would love to see us, please call her -blah blah blah. Like I said, it's obvious to me this is a result of my dad telling her what she said because it's not like she called the day or two after we saw her.
So since she left a message - is now in my court. I am really annoyed at my dad and haven't spoken to him yet. I don't really desire to see my aunt, because it's obvious they don't really want to see us and I'm ok with that, but made this awkward call because of what my dad said.
Should I ignore it? Do I call her back and have an equally awkward conversation?
If you still continued reading up to this point, I thank you would and would appreciate any advice!Chat Icon

I would call back and say it was nice seeing her, hope she's feeling better and leave it at that. I wouldn't make plans to GTG or anything.

Re: Need Advice Please on Family Situation (long)

If this happened to me, I would call my aunt back and just explain that I was talking to my dad and wanted to make sure everything was alright because I hadn't seen them in awhile and when I bumped into her she seemed quiet or 'different' so rather than her thinking I was calling her out to my dad, I'd let her know it was asked out of concern but obviously didn't want to confront her since we hadn't seen each other in awhile. Then, to tell you the truth, I'd leave it at that. You said you don't really want to visit w/ her so if she mentions it I would just say something like 'that sounds nice, but since i'm only here for such and such a time, i have a pretty packed schedule' If you change your mind then go and have fun, but if not, you shouldn't have to force it.

Then i'd definitely talk to my dad and ask him politely to keep our convo's private b/c it puts me in an awkward spot and if he said he felt put in an awkward spot, then I'd filter the things I said to him in the future... just in case! I have a friend that everytime I talk to I treat like she has a tape recorder because I know she likes to talk to everyone about other people's business. She doesn't mean any harm, but she can sometimes cause it so I'm cautious. I hope this helps!

I would call her back. And I really wouldn't be mad at your dad or anything for saying something. Maybe he was just trying to find out what was going on with herChat Icon
