Need Advice, Niece has RSV, Fluid in Lungs, Hospital Advice too

My little 7 month old niece has RSV, Pnuemonia, and fluid in her lungs, she is hooked up to alot of machines.
SHe is at South Nassau Communites Hospital in Oceanside.

Anyone know how serious this condition is?

Also how is this hospital, They dont seem to be telling my sister anything....the baby is still not getting better...Is there another Hospital she should go to that can take better care of Babies with this?

I don't know anything about that hospital but when it comes to my kids (and when I lived in NY) I would only take them to North Shore Manhasset.

If you read up on this forum, there are many babies that get RSV this time of year. Your neice's condition sounds serious however. I don't understand why they haven't said anything to your sister though? I pray that your neice gets better quickly!

my dd had rsv and fluid on her lungs at 2 months old. she was in the hospital for one week. she was in LIJ. its an excellant hospital and they kept me informed on everything!!! i dont know anything about the hospital your niece is in. rsv can be extremly serious, but thats usually in children who were premies and weakened immune systems. im sure your neice will be fine. its very scary. i know.

I just went thru RSV with my DD and it is definitely scary. We started off at South Nassau and was then transferred to Schneiders Childrens where she spent a day in. She was on her nebulizer 3x/day plus taking a liquid steriod 1x day. It could take up to a couple of weeks for recovery. We were scared for our DD- labored breathing, dehydrated, etc.

My Ped recommends going to Winthrop or Schneiders. They have better capacity to take care of children.

It is very serious, but also very common. Your niece has RSV and pneumonia - so it's a bit more complicated. Typical treatment for RSV is to monitor her oxygen (usually the wire on her toe) and are give nebulizer treatments and suctioning any mucous that she can't cough up.

I don't know what the treatment is for fluid in the lungs with babies but I would research it for your sis since she probably can't get to a computer. She should demand updates from the Dr.s even if they aren't sure of the progress.

RSV has to run it's course, they'll just treat the breathing difficulty in the meantime. it's the pneumonia and the fluid I"d be extra concerned about. I hope she gets well soon.

I would be very concerned if they weren't communicating to the mom.

My DD was in the NICU at NS Manhasset. Every time I called or was visiting the doc on her case made himself/herself available within, at most, a few minutes to speak to me.

If I was going through the same I'd have her transferred to Schneider's or NSUH Manhasset. JMO.

Schneider's Childrens Hospital at LIJ!!!!!!! My daughter didn't have RSV but she had another illness as a small child and we took her there. They were amazing!!!!!! I always said if any of my children were seriously ill again I would definitely take them there!

2 kids at my sons daycare had this and wound up in the hospital--i think it is okay as long as they are watching it

My ped. always told me if it is anything serious to take DS to Winthrop Ped. ER...they always have specialists on call and have excellent dr's there. he said North Shore LIJ isn't as good as it used to be.
