Nails, Gym, & Pregnancy
I just got my BFP this morning but I don't have a doctor's appointment until the end of the month.
DH thinks it is unsafe for me to get my nails done. I get silk wraps every 2 weeks & he is concerned about the fumes & nail products. What do you think?
I go to the gym 3-4 times per week. Can I continue as usual? Is there any exercises I should refrain from - abs?
Thanks - I have so many questions & have to wait 3 weeks to speak to my doctor!

Nail are fine- as long as the smell doesnt make you sick. I would pick a well ventilated salon. the gym- you can keep going- just stay away from ab work and keep an eye on your heart rate- i think its supposed to reamian under 140?

Re: Nails, Gym, & Pregnancy
With both pregrancies the dr did not say anything about getting my nails done. I was getting acrylic done. He said as long as I had them removed before I had the baby than that was fine. But like with the first, as soon as I fouind out I was preggo I just started getting a regular manicure.

Re: Nails, Gym, & Pregnancy
With my first pregnancy, I went to get my nails done every 2-3 weeks. I had acrylic nails too.
As for the gym, I used to go 3-4 times a week. I was so tired, I never made it there. If you do have the energy, do light activity. Walking on the treadmil and extremely light weights are fine. Try not to raise your heart rate too high when working out. Yea, no ab work either.
Congrats on your BFP!!

Re: Nails, Gym, & Pregnancy
congrats!
i personally stay out of nail salons when preggo. i did have to get a bikini wax over the summer but was in and out in a flash. many people don't think it's a big deal.
the only exercise i do while pregnant is walk, but i have been out of shape for years so i'm not one to talk. if i was working out like you (and i was at one point way back when), i'd probably slowly start to slow it down...

No abs and you have to keep your heart rate under 140. Other than that, just try and take it easy.....if you even have the energy. I couldn't have made it to the gym in the beginning if you paid me!

Congrats! I totally feel you girl... soo many questions. It's still all new to me. Only seen the Doc once. He said nails and the gym are fine. Try not to overdue it at the gym and stay away from working out your abs. I like the treadmill or eliptical.

Re: Nails, Gym, & Pregnancy
the dr never said anything to me about getting my nails done.. as long as the fumes dont bother you!
The gym is fine as well as long as you were active prior to conceiving. i think after a certain point you shouldnt do ab workouts.

Re: Nails, Gym, & Pregnancy
My doctor and trainer (when I had one ) told me to stick with whatever workout routine I was used to.
Ab work is FINE until it's too uncomfortable to do so. Your ab muscles have nothing to do with your uterus. The reason you have to stop ab work is because a majority of ab exercises are done on your back- which is difficult and can cause dizziness/shortness of breath once you get bigger.

Congrats on your BFP!! ITA.
The jury was still out regarding the nails. One Dr said it was fine for me to get my mani (I have natural nails) as long as the person next to me was not getting tips, so I guess that one you should wait and talk to your Dr.
As far as the gym, ITA with Stephanie. If you have the energy then have a blast! My Dr. recommended swimming as a great low-impact workout. Ask your OB if indoor pools are OK.
Congrats!
ETA: Also about the nails...your nails might change in texture and will most likely grow faster and stronger when you are on the Pre-Nats. It does not happen for everyone, but you may not even need to get your nails done. Also the re-growth is quciker if the Pre-Nats make your nails grow more. Even for my regular mani, I have to go weekly now rather than every other week or they grow out of control!

Re: Nails, Gym, & Pregnancy
My doctor told me it was okay to continue working out. I also got told nothing about getting my nails done. I don't get acrylic nails anymore, but I still go in for mani/pedi every few weeks. I see nothing wrong with it. The only thing I'm cautious about is where I go. I have been going to the same place for two years. I know they are very clean and well ventilated. I used to go to the walk-in salons every now and then, but I stay clear of them now. I just don't know how clean they are. Especially the fact that they do mass amounts of people in a day. This is just me though, so don't worry about it. I'm a little neurotic while I'm PG. I will probably go back after the baby.
