Nails - an observation
I used to be a manicure whore. Go every week, freak out when I got a chip, the whole nine. Back in October, I decided to stop getting my nails "done" and start doing them myself. I never had fake nails/tips - always my natural god-given nails.
Holy crap, the difference is amazing. My nails are so much stronger - I can't tell you the last time I had a broken nail. They seem to be growing faster now was well. The biggest difference, though, is the coloring of my actual nails. Once I stopped going to get them done, I noticed how discolored they were. The new growth that came up was such a sharp contrast to what was there - you could clearly see the line from when I stopped going.
I actually look forward to doing my own nails now.
I know there's no real point to this, just thought I'd share since I have noticed such a huge difference.

I am one of the extreme FEW who never ever get my nails done, or toes. I have to say, I love my nails. They are so thick, and healthy.
Its funny that someone else noticed it!

Re: Nails - an observation
Yep- doing my own nails for YEARS now And yes, they last so much longer when you do them at home. What really pizzes me off is when I see them thining the polish with lacquer thinner at the nail places- to make it go further- and then it chips in a day.
ETA- not to mention that I got a NASTY fungus from getting a pedicure that is STILL affecting my toenail- and the podiatrist said pedicures are the worst thing you can get. Even if they wash and disinfect the basins, the fungus and bacteria can live in the jets.

Re: Nails - an observation
I was never a manicure wh0re but I have never ever gotten a manicure that I loved and they always chipped within one or two days.
I used to get pedicures all the time though and I would end up with these weird whie spots on my toenails Since doing them myself, I have no issues and they are perfectly healthy.
I always do my own nails now and I get much more mileage out of my manis! I'm on day three right now, no chips. I re-apply top coat every other day which helps A LOT.

ITA with this. I originally stopped getting my nails done years ago when I became a SAHM, and getting to the nail place just wasn't happening on a regular basis. Now I do have the time and money to get them done, but not the desire! Not only do my at-home manis seem to last longer, but when they DO chip, you don't get that frustrated feeling when you just spent $$$ on it and now it looks crappy

Re: Nails - an observation
Yup! I noticed the same thing. I was a religious manicure every two weeks - this is my ME time - girl.
A few years ago, ONLY to save money I stopped going.
I used this weekly: ONSEN nail care with buffer and cuticle lotion
and my nails and toenails look AMAZING! they are clear, healthy and have no ridges
For Christmas I got this:
and this:
with the buffer and OMG now not only are my nails amazing but my hands are always super soft!
I only get pedicures now for the summer months, but have not gotten a manicure in years!

Re: Nails - an observation
I used to do fake nails a lot in highschool. I abused them. So badly that one nail was so weak that it ripped off... at the quick. It was so weak in fact, that it didn't even hurt! But it looked nasty so it freaked me out. Since then, I've only had fake nails for my wedding and I took them off a month later. My nails are SUPER strong. The one that fell off? Forget it, I can barely clip the damn thing it's so strong! lol!

Re: Nails - an observation
I find when I do my nails myself they last a lot longer. I have only been able to find 1 salon in 10 years that can do a manicure that lasts more than 3 days. At $11 a pop including tip weekly, I think I'll do them myself.

What really pizzes me off is when I see them thining the polish with lacquer thinner at the nail places- to make it go further- and then it chips in a day.
YES!!! This used to make me livid! I was paying a lot of money just to have my nails filed and painted and they would add thinner right in front of me. Geeze, at least do this secretly in the back so I don't realize how bad you're ripping me off!

One time I brought my own polish- a brand new bottle of OPI- to avoid this. And the woman had the balls to try to add thinner to it! She was like- "Oh it's too thick" Yeah, dumbass, it's SUPPOSED to be thick like that...so it won't chip off when I look at it!

Re: Nails - an observation
I just wanted to add on a similar note:
I used to use all those Sally Hansen treatments and the Sephora hydrator treatment. They did nothing for my nails and actually made them worse.
A few weeks ago I started just leaving my nails bare and putting Dior Apricot Creme on my nails before bed. Now my nails are so healthy and the have stopped peeling. I think sometimes with nails less is more.

Is there something bad about putting the nail thinner in? I just bought some last week because a favorite color of mine had gotten goopy

It does that over time. But nail places should never get to that point since they have such high turnover. They do it to make the nail polish last longer.

Me, too. I rarely go for manicures or pedicures and I've always had really nice nails. I never understand when people say they have weak nails. I do, however, have dry skin.

Just that it seems that once you start adding thinner, it makes the polish chip faster. It probably depends how much though. Salons do it all the time , I assume to stretch the bottle, so if you get one that is very diluted, it chips so easily.

Re: Nails - an observation
I thought that they add thinner in the salons because they sometimes leave bottles opened for too long. So they add thinner if the polish starts to dry out. I usually bring my own polish. I just like to know that I own the colors I use so that I can fix a chip. Also, I can look through my colors and decide in advance. I had them add thinner to one of my bottles when it was getting old.
