it depends on where you're going and what type of phone you have. often, phones are capaple of working outside the US and you just have to call your carrier to let them know and to pick some sort of "plan." Some phones don't work outside the US or the country is on a different system. members of my family go to Ireland a lot for example, so we just bought a phone over there and whoever is going next takes the phone and puts money on the SIM card for thier own use.
