My Walk-through vent
My dh and I went to my walk-through yesterday and I can't believe how disapointed I am. (He feels the same way.) I haven't seen the house the inside of the house in 1 1/2 months and wow, it is soooo much smaller than I remember it! All the furniture is gone so how does the house seem smaller? I don't even know how they got so much furniture into the house! The owners moved out about 2 weeks ago and now the lawn and yard looks like crap. With all this rain lately the weeds are growing crazy, 1/2 feet of grass and some junk on the property from the wind etc. I feel like if I could go back in time I shouldn't have made an offer on this house! Plus while I was there I also met my neighbor who borders my back fence and I don't like him. And to top it all off, the re agent tells us to be careful of the next door neighbor dog b/c he use to jump the 6 foot fence to attack/bite the children who lived there before! I have a 2 1/2 year old and one on the way! I am going to be closing tomorrow and I don't even know how I can sign those papers.
Thanks for letting me vent....

Re: My Walk-through vent
Don't worry about the house appearing smaller - i feel that houses always look smaller with no furniture. My apartment was the same way - you would never imagine that you could get all the things in there that i had.
once you get in and mow the lawn and you put your furniture in I am sure it will look great. as for the dog - the first time that thing jumps the fence I would call the police. Maybe even go over there beforehand and express your concerns to the neighbor. I would NOT tolerate a violent dog in my backyard.

Don't worry at all - it is so normal to have anxiety before you close. The whole thing is so stressful and there are so many ways to second guess yourself.
Once you cut the grass, and weed a few of the beds back you will be shocked at how clean everything looks. We our grass gets a bit long, it does make everything look messy. Don't worry - you are doing the right thing.
I would call the cops on the dog too - but that sounds weird to me... what kind of dog can jump over a six foot fence.

Re: My Walk-through vent
I'm sorry you are going through this. We had a similar feeling about the size of our house when we saw it without furniture but once we moved in we realized our fears were unfounded.
As for the yard just a few hours of clean up will make such a huge difference.
No need to be great friends with the guy behind you, as long as you stay on amicable terms you won't be seeing him too often as long as you have a fence. Sometimes first impressions might be wrong too, you never know.
As for the dog, this should be your main concern, but can be dealt with. I'd most certainly meet the neighbor to get a feel for their stance on it and to let them know your concerns.
Maybe you could plant a fast growing hedge that will grow higher than the 6 foot fence. If it jumped just once - and yes many dogs can jump that high - most just don't know it - I'd put up a volleyball or badminton net, higher than the fence to try to stop him.
There are repellants you can put on the fence and in the yard but I'm not sure if they are recommended for use around children. I'd keep a very close eye on the dog and report every instance to the police that concerns you. Keep your own records too. I am a dog lover but absolutely support an animal being removed from a situation where it poses a danger.
Don't worry too much, it'll all work out, remember you loved this house for a reason in the beginning. It'll come back.

The houses always look much smaller after the furniture is taken out. The same thing happened to us.

Re: My Walk-through vent
we felt the same way when we walked through ours all the carpets were ruined. when we first saw it they were perfect the house seemed destroyed and smaller and we were thinking we made a huge mistake and now we absolutely love our house and are happy so just take a deep breathe and it will be all ok once you get your furniture in .

Re: My Walk-through vent
Well, today we closed on the house. Afterwards we went to the house to see what we are going into a 30-year debt for. It actually felt nice to see the house and say, hey this house may not be ohmigod fantastic but hey it's MINE. It still feels small, although I really hope, as many of you have posted, that after the furniture is in, it will feel "bigger". Thanks for your posts! I am realy glad all this is done. Now on to spending everything I have on the "money pit".
My piece of cr*p money pit, but hey it's mine.

Re: My Walk-through vent
When DH and I first moved into our house it was depressing b/c it was bare, unfurnished, needed to be cleaned b/c the people didnt clean before they left but as soon as we painted, did some yard work and moved furniture in, it became a home. Things will get better, trust me!

Re: My Walk-through vent
Congratulations on closing!!!
I will never forget how disappointed we were when we got the keys to our co-op. We went in and started running from room to room. With each room I got more and more upset. I found so many things wrong and couldn't understand how we could have been so careless as to not see them. DH laughed at me and now, after years, I can admit that those things really weren't that bad. I just had a different expectation.
We walked down the block, got some chinese food and sat in our empty living room eating. As I started to relax I became excited again that we owned the place. Five years later I love my place and I am honestly sad to leave. You will make this place your home, you'll make it look 100 times better than you could have ever imaged and one day you'll back and laugh thinking that it wasn't too bad to begin with - and proud of what you made it. Trust me. There is no way YOU would have made a mistake. I am sure this home is great!

ANG-RICH: I felt exactly the way you are describing. It was just more and more disapointment with every room I walked through. I felt like I had made a big, very expensive mistake. But, now that the idea of homeownership, the house itself and whatever has had time to in my head, I feel happy. I can't wait to move in.
Thanks for your kind post.
