My son is allergic to.....
DUST!!!!!!!!!!!!! After a difficult month of severe allergic reactions...we finally found out today what my poor baby is allergic to. I know ppl say it could be worse, but i'm so sad bc DUST is everywhere..it's actually dust mites. First time, he broke out with hives EVERYWHERE...second time all over his arms. Now dr said to always keep benedryl and epipen with me at all times...sooo scary
Do any of you have a child with Dust allergies?

Re: My son is allergic to.....
Well, Ava goes to the allergist tomorrow and I have a feeling they will say this too. I have to say, I have a dust and dust-mite allergy and it's awful. The good news is, you can control it. I always had an air purifier in my room, plus I have special covers on my pillows and mattress. If I sleep in a hotel and forget my pillows at home, I wake up with a swollen throat, eyes, runny nose, you name it. My best advice is those two things: air purifier for his room and covers for his bed and pillows when he gets older. Oh, and also no rugs or carpet in his room, no stuffed animals or anything that can trap dust. You get used to it. My sister always hated that I couldn't do the dusting in my hosue when we were growing up. My hands literally swell if I dust.

Not to dust, but to dog and cat hair. She is also very allergic to certain pollens. So much so that it affects her ability to eat certain fruits and veggies.

Re: My son is allergic to.....
I'm hoping my DD doesn't have this, but I can tell you - I did. The only thing that helped me was having allergy shots when I got older. Unfortunately, they didn't know what my deal was and it got worse over time. I wasn't "officially" diagnosed until I was about 9, I mean I had all sorts of meds and even adrenaline shots (OUCH!) b/c I couldn't breathe. Once they knew what it was, I did shots for about 3 years... after that I had far fewer problems and in recent years my allergy tests as an adult always come up completely clean - not allergic to anything, but I do have something they called "nonallergic rhinitis". Basically anything can set it off at any time.
I hope they are able to give your DC some relief. Dust is tough b/c you can't avoid it but there are some things I'm sure your doctor will tell you to do (back in the day they said no rugs, stuffed animals, etc in my bedroom, my dad installed central electronic air cleaners in the house too and he got a small one specifically for my room too, it wasn't a purifier, but an acutual air cleaner - you'd probably have to contact an HVAC company to find out more about it).

I also hope that your DD doesnt have this allergy too! I'm sorry that you do! As far as what the Dr can do for him..he said if a reaction, give benedryl right away...then call him...that's all we can do for now. Oh..and like you said..we can get rid of things that collect a lot of dust..i already started this as soon as my little man went to bed!! I will look into the air cleaner..thanks!!

As a precaution, I don't have any stuffed animals in her room - one's we got as gifts for her go in her closet and are kept in ziplock bags, we change the bedding whether it needs it or not - at least once a week. We vacuum in her room frequently and in our new house we want her room to have wood floors rather than carpet - but even in this room it's burbur (sp?) not plush (plush holds dust in more) and we steam the rug regularly too with a hoover steamer. We clean the walls and blinds regularly too. We have the central air cleaner as well. In time I may get her the smaller cleaner just for her room.

Re: My son is allergic to.....
I have dust allergies - they used to be really bad as a child but I never got hives - I would get a bad cough and breathing issues, headaches, sore throat and sinus problems. I had a lot of trouble at places like libraries, and in my classroom with the chalk dust.
Mine got significantly better as I got older. As an above poster mentioned you can get an air purifier, special mattress and pillow covers. I can only dust with wet clothes. You can get vacuums that are better containing the dust when you use them. Rugs are dust collectors so hardwood floors are easier and better for dust allergies. Stuff animals are dust collectors too. If you have to have them - get ones that are machine washable and wash them often.
I did get allergy shots when I was younger b.c I was allergic to many things but I'm not sure that they really helped. The good news is that in time many people do outgrow a lot of their allergies (I think I was told every 10-15 years you can outgrow and also develop new ones).

Thank you so much!! Im gonna get ride of his stuffed animals that are in his crib...it's just hard bc those are the ones he is used to having in his crib for a long time. However, it's more important for him to feel comfortable. Im gonna get machine washable ones...maybe i will be able to find ones close to the ones he has...thanks again!!

Re: My son is allergic to.....
I have very bad allergies. Even vacuuming and dusting is a nightmare for me.
I still live with carpet floors. But we are going to remove them downstairs in all the bedrooms and LR and go with laminate.
Things to do:
Wash sheets in hot water No plush animals Wash curtains often Vacuum 1-2 times per week minimum
I also have 2 dogs but they are a mixed breed so they are hypoallergenic. Otherwise I could not have dogs.
