My poor little boy!
DS is almost 5 and we confirmed today that he has a severe peanut allergy. Fortunately he vehemently hates PB which is why we havent found out until now.
Since he doesnt like PB that part is easy. But because of cross contamination, everything has to change for him now. No more school lunches, no more sharing snacks with his friends in class, he has to sit next to the teacher at lunch, cant go on a trip without someone trained to administer an epi-pen.
I feel so bad he has to go through all this, and even worse that its for something he doesnt even like.

Hugs for Ryan -- poor kid -- he may enjoy the attention for a little while at least!!
That means your home has to be peanut-free now, right?

Oh the poor little guy! My husband is very allergic to peanuts (not as severly as it sounds like your son is though) so I always worry about our daughter being allergic as well. We are very careful about peanut products in out home.

Peanut allergies are very scary.
My friend's dd is severely allergic to peanuts, her older son isn't and loves peanut butter. She gets sunflower butter from Trader Joes and he has no idea it's different. In case someone else in your house really likes peanut butter.

yeah fine for DH, but I love my peanut butter. Guess I'll have to keep it at work. If I eat it and kiss him he could have a reaction.
I'll have to try that sunflower butter a pp mentioned.

Re: My poor little boy!
I know exactly how you feel... My DD has a severe peanut/treenut allergy. Milk, eggs, and fish/shellfish is also potentially life threatening to her.
There is a great website of local moms called PAK - Protectallergickids.com. They have a support group meeting once a month, but you can pop online and ask questions. Especially since your son is school age, the school, and bus driver's have a certain responsibility for him.
I understand how overwhelmed and heartbroken you are for your son. My DD's allergies changed our family. From what we eat to longer being able to go certain places.
Just know you're not alone.
Also - FANN is a great resource. I suggest you join - They can send you alerts on food products that may be contaminated with allergens.

Poor guy. I use to babysit a 7 year old that had an allergy to peanuts. It was scary taking care of him. I was so affraid I would accidently give him something with peanuts in it. It didn't seem to bug him though. He hated peanuts too.

I know alot of schools are completely peanut free so the kids with allergies dont have to worry.

Poor Ryan.
Thank goodness it's only peanuts. As a PP said many schools have gone peanut free because o f it. I had a students 2 or 3 years ago that had a severe allergy to all dairy.

Re: My poor little boy!
Thanks everyone. Sadly his school is not peanut free
I have a lot of research to do once the shock settles down. The thing I think I am struggling with the most is changing the things I have done for 5 years without any problems. Like eating things with traces of nuts, or even going out to restaurants

Re: My poor little boy!
Did the doctor explain how this happened NOW? 5 years later? When for 5 years he's been eating foods containing traces of peanut? That is so bizarre!
That really sux, cause now you really have to live/ eat so differently. You will see my friend Barbara at Nicholas' party. Feel free to ask her ANYTHING about food allergies. Unfortunately, she knows about it all too well and can definitely help you out.
Meanwhile...many to Ryan.

he said he has probably been having a reaction in his mouth this whole time to peanut butter (why he hates it so much) but never had the verbal skills to say it made his mouth feel funny. He also does have eczema, so the traces he has been eating could attribute to his flare ups.

Re: My poor little boy!
I'm sorry your son has a peanut allergy - alot of kids have allergies even so that schools now are very aware of peanut allergies in kids now and days. At my friends school, all the kids that have peanut allergies sit at the same table and there is a nutritionist monitoring them making sure their food does not contain any peanuts in them. I think it is a great idea because kids sometimes whitch lunches/snacks and could be very dangerous for those with allergies.
