My piano pics... and a few questions.
It is still in the garage - hopefully in a few days it will be moved inside. It is an Emerson piano, mahogany, with ivory keys. Here's a pic:
Does anyone know a good piano tuner in Suffolk? I played some scales on it and it sounds pretty good, but want to get it tuned and checked anyway. Another question. A few keys are chipped. Can they be fixed if they are realy ivory? if not I will just have them filed so they are not sharp. Thanks!

Re: My piano pics... and a few questions.
There is a place in Patchogue on 112 called The Piano Outlet. My neighbor uses them to tune her piano and thinks they are great. I know they overhaul them too.
I just had a similar piano overhauled by someone else about two years ago, but I wasn't happy with the final result. It was a lot of money and they did just an o.k. job.
My piano had keys that looked the same way as yours and they told me that they weren't ivory - but some kind of acrylic overlay (my piano is about 60 years old). I hope I don't find out one day that they were ivory because they replaced them all.

Good to know. DH got this for me from craigslist, and the peron he bought it from said they were Ivory, but who really knows.
I am so excited, i can't wait to play it inside.

I believe ivory keys are extremely hard to repair. Your probably going to have to file them (if they're real). Sorry, I can't help with a tuner....I only know 1 in Nassau. Your piano's gorgeous!!!
As my grandma would say, "use it in good health"

Re: My piano pics... and a few questions.
I have a tuner I use for my classroom pianos, we're right in Smithtown, I can get you his number if you'd like. If they are real ivory, you're probably looking at a situation of filing them or putting filler on there.

oh yeah, I forgot to say, one of the hardest parts (I think) about repairing ivory keys would be matching the color.

Re: My piano pics... and a few questions.
I think I would just file them and not fill them, so people wouldn't get scratched. Rightnow it deosn't seem like the chips would affect the playing.
Can you send me the Smithtown phone number?
