if I catch her and pull her hand out of her mouth she will fight me and run away so she can hide and do it

what can I do to make her stop

I don't have kids...so I don't know from any kind of personal experience...maybe give your pediatrician a call? Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: My dd keeps making her self vomit

YES! YES! YES!!

DD does this all the time for attention. I can't understand why thought - she certainly has my attention all the time. I spoke to the pediatrician who told me to ignore it. She is looking to get a reaction and I usually give her one when I freak out and oull her hand out. The doc said let her do it and don't react to it. I "let' her do it a time or two after that and she did make herself throw up - but that was basically the end of it. She hasn't done it in weeks - thank God!

No experience with this personally, but I found this online. Chat Icon

This is often a normal behavior and would not be considered a sign of an eating disorder at this age.

In an infant that is otherwise growing and developing normally, as long as you don't reinforce it, it should eventually stop.

How would you reinforce it? For example, you could:

get very upset, overly excited, or mad
aggressive in telling her to stop doing it
keep pulling her fingers out of her mouth
Doing any or all of these things could turn what is likely to be a normal developmental phase that could quickly pass into a long term problem.
Instead of making a big deal out of her vomiting, it would be better to stay calm and clean her up matter of factly and pretend that nothing happened.

It may also help to distract her and keep her hands busy if it seems like she is getting ready to make herself vomit, and keep her on a routine for meals, naps, and a bedtime, to make sure that stress isn't contributing to this behavior.

Other signs that this might be more of a medical problem might include that she wasn't eating well, was having trouble starting solid foods, was not gaining weight well, or if she was often fussy.

Even without other symptoms, if it increases or persists, a visit to her Pediatrician would also be a good idea.

My DS has done this in the past (he's 20months now). He would do it for pure attention, or when he was frustrated.

My kids didn't do it but I would treat it like any other offense - hitting, etc.

If you do a time-out chair, do that. If you say no TV, do that. Whatever you do to get her to stop something, do the same.

Re: My dd keeps making her self vomit

My DS is 20 months and does this sometimes too. My other 2 never did it. He has never made himself throw up but he gags and then laughs. Psycho! He hasnt done it often enough for me to get overly worried but I can totally see it being for attention. He is the youngest and while everyone loves attention, he has to claim his share of attention from his older brother & sister.
