My cousin's house...
burnt to the ground.
What can I send him?
I understand insurance will cover everything but what do you think him and his wife really need right now?
They do not live on Long Island. (ETA: He lives outside of Portland, Maine.)
Everyone was OK his wife, baby, and cat got out OK. It was an electrical fire that started in the basement.

wow OMG.
are they staying at a hotel? maybe you could partially pay for their stay since I think they have to put out the $$ and be reimbursed?
or maybe send some clothing?
I would also go throw old pictures andsuch and see if there is anything you think your cousin would want that you could duplicate...they had to have lost all of that stuff.
I am sorry for the destruction of his home...but happy to hear no one was physically injured.

I love all of your ideas! The picture one is great... I was just thinking of how many things you have that just can't be replaced!
We're having a big family party in a few weeks. I'll ask everyone to bring a few photos that he would love.

This is the first thing that came to my mind... so many things that can't be replaced. I would get in touch w/ their parents and see if they have any of their wedding invites, baby announcements, stuff like that and either send out an email or a letter asking everyone to email what pics they have that might be meaningful to them- and those that aren't on the computer if they could each bring important pics--- then you could scan them and get real prints made thru snapfish or someplace and send them over... that's so sad.

That's a great idea!
I agree with a GC to Target or Walmart. That way they can get whatever they need.

Re: My cousin's house...
When my house burned down the best thing I got was gift cards. Any store near them that they can get a bunch of different things (Target, Walmart, Kmart, etc) to hold them over until the insurance starts picking up the tab.
I'm so sorry. House fires are horrible, there's nothing scarier. And there is not much else in the world that makes you feel so helpless.

Re: My cousin's house...
OMG - I am so sorry to hear this!
When our house burned down, we were very appreciative of gift cards to local food places, places like Target and the like, and we also received a lot of donations like yard supplies (it was the springtime), offers to stay with people while they did the demo and re-build...
Thank God everyone got out OK. Everything (almost) is replaceable.

Re: My cousin's house...
I'm definitely going to get together a few GC's that can help them out right away. I just have to see what's local for them as they are up in Portland. I'm sure mostly everything is around.

Re: My cousin's house...
Oh my gosh, how terribly horrible! So sorry to hear about this I would recommend a gift card to a grocery store or a place like Target where a lot of shopping can be done for the family.....good luck and so sorry to hear about this.

Omg I'm so sorry!! Glad everyone (including the cat) got out OK tho and no one was hurt, that's the most important thing.
As for something to send, I like the idea of gift cards. Maybe an Amex one so they can use it anywhere.

OMG! So devasting!!
The first thing I though of was pictures
My next thought was GC for food. Since they don't have a place to cook or eat - they might need that.
Where are they located?

Re: My cousin's house...
This happened to an old co-worker of mine...a lot of people gave them everyday household items, gift certificates...things to help them "rebuild". But I do remember her saying that she didn't have any pictures from her wedding or from her children growing up...so if you could get people to bring pictures to the family party, that would be a great idea.
