My catty is a fatty
Well, not really. But he was 16.5 lbs (big frame) and the vet wanted him at 15. We got him down to 15.5 but then we had to switch his food since he has the urine crystals. So now he is back up to 16.5.
We only feed him wet food once a day and dry twice (once with the wet on top). Any suggestions to bring his weight down? Should we just do a TINY amount of dry food with wet on top for both meals?
How much dry should you give per day (both meals) for a cat that is trying to lose weight?
We don't give snacks either as part of his new "I don't want to pee blood" diet.

Re: My catty is a fatty
Our cat recently got the "You're too fat!" talk from the vet too. We have been giving Edgar 1 full cup of Iams Weight Control dry cat food a day. Our vet said no wet food and only greenies for treats on occasion. We also play with him for about 15-20 min every night. I think just like people excersise is important so try to get your cat to move around. Edgar loves the cat dancer and anything with feathers. He also loves to play chase
ETA: We leave the food down for our cat all day. He grazes and never seems to finish the cup of food we give him.
He was 15.5 lbs a month ago and has since lost a little over 1/2 lb on this regime.

Re: My catty is a fatty
Aww.
One of my kitties was 18 lbs. The vet put him on a diet of 1/8 cup dry food 2x a day. A few times a week, we'll switch one of those meals to 1/4 of a can of wet food. Both of my cats eat Hills Prescription K/D, since one has a kidney issue, and it happened to be low calorie enough to serve as diet food for the chubby one.
I'm happy to tell you, my handsome guy now weighs 11 lbs. The vet is really happy.
Our vet said that the recommended amount of food listed on the bag is for very active cats, and most don't need quite that much. I'd ask your vet specifically how much to feed, and use a measuring cup.
Good luck!

Re: My catty is a fatty
My K.C was 21 pounds at one point. Oh was he cute but really big.
we got him down to about 17 pounds and the doc was happy.
Unfortunately my kitty passed last year but it wasn't from any weight related issue.
I fed him Science Diet senior since he was about 10 years old. That formula is low in calories. I only fed him dry food and gave him lean treats.
I like the Science Diet product.

Re: My catty is a fatty
I have two 26 lb cats. (Yes I know way too big). I have to find cat food that is low in fat and ash & magnesium (because one of them had a problem with stones). The cat food we feed them now is low in ash & magnesium but has caused them to gain more weight. I know the vet has food, but I can't spend that much $.
