My boss has Shingles
He just called to tell me that he came into work, but that he'll be avoiding me for a few days & that I should do the same & avoid his office (thankfully it's across the building). I know nothing about it & I'm about to start Googling it, but thought that I'd come on here first to see if anyone knows anything about it & how bad it is for a pg woman to be exposed to it? Thanks!
Update: Thanks for the advice everyone. My OB called & told me that I'll be fine since I had chickenpox as a kid. I'm still going to avoid him for the rest of the week anyway though

Are you immune to chicken pox? If you are, then you don't need to worry.
If you aren't, then call your doctor, because likely you have already been exposed.

Not true!
I had chicken pox as a kid and got shingles at the beginning of this pregnancy. If you do get it, it's painful and annoying, but won't harm the baby.

Re: My boss has Shingles
Thanks for replying ladies. What I've read online so far has been saying it both ways...that I won't get it if I had chickenpox as a kid & that I can get it so I have no clue! I did have chickenpox, but I'm going to call my OB just in case. It seems like it's painful & I don't want to have to deal with it or expose my dh or ds to it

Shingles is not the problem while pregnant, chicken pox is a problem when pregnant. If she is not immune to chicken pox then she needs to call her doctor. You can't catch shingles, you can only catch chicken pox from shingles.

stay away from your bosss ~ My hubby's cousin had shingles around Christmas ~ she knew I was pregnant and didn't even come to Christmas! Her doctor said she should not be around any pregnant women ~ especially in first trimester!

My dad had it when I was PG with DD and the Dr said I had to be exposed to the sores to get it.
Some people can still get it if they had chicken pox, but they are not immune. Its rare, but possible.

this you can't catch shingles, it's a reactivation of the chickenpox within your own body, but you can get chickenpox if you haven't had it

Re: My boss has Shingles
Like Katie said above, you can NOT catch shingles. However, if you are not immune to chicken pox, if you are in touch with the sores or fluid of someone who has shingles, you can then get chicken pox which is not good during pregnancy.
If you've had chicken pox as a child, you very well may be immune, but that is not a guarantee.
I asked them to check if I am immune to chicken pox when they ran the initial bloodwork with this pregnancy - just to be sure I'm immune (which I am thankfully). Your doctor can check your file to see if they specifically checked to see if you're immune to chicken pox.
