My 5 yr old dd needs glasses
Just saw the opthomologist and my dd needs glasses. She's upset and I worry she might get teased as she starts kindergarten. Anyone in a similar situation?

My 5 yr old dd needs glasses
My son started wearing glasses in kindergarten. He's a really big kid so he was wearing adult frames when he was 7, that was a challenge to get frames that looked good on him. I don't think he ever got made fun of for his glasses. He's a little clumsy so we've had issues with them breaking but usually had a spare pair. He has terrible vision and has tried contacts but doesn't like them. He's 28 now and considering lasik surgery.

Re: My 5 yr old dd needs glasses
My son got glasses at 3 1/2 so he was younger. Someone I work with told me many years ago (her kids are all grown), that one of her son's friends got glasses in kindergarten. The mom pulled all the moms aside and was worried in case anyone would tease him and please keep an eye out. Well, when her son came to school, all the other kids wanted to wear his glasses! This lady told me her own son came home crying it wasn't fair he doesn't get glasses too She finally got him a new pair of sunglasses but he was upset it wasn't 'real' glasses. So you never know how kids will act.
Glasses are so common now I really don't think it will be a big deal. Good luck!

Re: My 5 yr old dd needs glasses
All 3 of my little ones wear them with my youngest being in preschool. My oldest, a 4th grader, started wearing them in kindergarten. They always get compliments on their glasses. At this point, they've never been teased for their glasses. More kids seem to wear them these days and with all the options in frames, it's another way for the kids to express their individuality.

Re: My 5 yr old dd needs glasses
I have been wearing them (well contacts now) since I was 4. My mom told me recently that she was so upset when they told her, but I was always fine as a kid and never had any real issues being picked on. I think it is harder on the parent than the kid

Re: My 5 yr old dd needs glasses
As a teacher for 20 years you really don't see kids getting teased for glasses anymore, so many people wear them its not a big deal, yes on a rare occasion it might happen from some mean kid but especially at that age I wouldn't worry

Re: My 5 yr old dd needs glasses
DD started wearing glasses 2 weeks into Kindergarten last year. No one teased her, and I just gave the teacher a heads up that she was getting them. DD calls them her fashion accessory. Only a couple times, did some girls on the bus ask her to take them off, but she knew to say no and that she needed them to see. It didn't bother her because she knew how important it is to correct her vision. Plus a couple other kids in her class wear glasses to, so it wasn't a big deal.

My 5 yr old dd needs glasses
My DD got glasses when she was in pre-k. No one has ever made fun of her for it, and you'll see as each school year goes by more and more of their classmates will get them too. She had to wear a patch too - that was a little harder to manage but still, no one really made fun of her. She got the occasional pirate comment, but generally it wasn't an issue.

My 5 yr old dd needs glasses
My ds just started wearing them in June- he's going into K in the fall. EVERYONE stops him and makes such a huge fuss over him and how cute he is with them. So much so that he ASKS to wear them now!
I think its so common place now that kids won't make fun of them too- we've had zero issues!

Re: My 5 yr old dd needs glasses
I feel like glasses are so common now that it doesn't phase other kids. Both my boys have a bunch of kids in their class with glasses. The abnormal is now the normal now if that makes sense. Not that glasses are abnormal, but everything from when we were kids is so different...
My DS has an IEP in school and has no issues getting taken out for OT and Speech. When I was younger I was embarrassed when they came to get me for Speech. Now half the class goes to Speech. More parents are divorced more parents both work full time more kids with glasses more severe allergies in school
I'm sure she'll look adorable! They have such great choices now. My niece and nephew have glasses and they look great. He even has special ones for when he plays soccer.

My 5 yr old dd needs glasses
I got a pair when I started K. My best friend back then was so jealous and begged her mom for them too. They were pink! No one ever made fun of me!
My niece is almost 4 and wears them now. My dd gets so upset and wants her glasses too (sunglasses) my nieces are pink just like mine were!

Re: My 5 yr old dd needs glasses
My dd got them when she turned 4. No one said boo to her about it. We all wear glasses so it was nothing out of the ordinary for her to see us in them. She's gone to pre-k and camp and no one said a word to her about them

Re: My 5 yr old dd needs glasses
My son has had glasses a year and a half already, starting when he was 3. And he looks cute as a button in them. I was worried about the same thing though. I ask him occasionally if anyone says anything. He says no. I do agree with what someone else said, I think it is harder on the parents. You just want them to be carefree and have no worries.

My 5 yr old dd needs glasses
mt dd has been wearing glasses since she was 7 months old. never had an issue with being teased. most kids don't even notice them, they're just part of her face. people actually will comment if they see her without glasses, because she looks so different without them.

Re: My 5 yr old dd needs glasses
My DD will be entering K in Sept. She's been wearing glasses since she was 2yrs old. I work in a school and it almost seems like every other kid wears glasses now a days. I'd be very surprised if she was "made fun of" because she wore glasses. Plus there is no choice in the matter, if a kid NEEDs glasses they have to wear them. Build her self esteem, read lots of books like Have You Filled a Bucket Today.

Re: My 5 yr old dd needs glasses
I feel like glasses are so trendy now and there are so many Tweens that wear those fake clear glasses. My SS has been wearing glasses since he was 2, and none of his childhood teasing was ever associated with glasses.
Let her pick out fun cute frames, get her excited about it! I think the hardest thing about kids wearing glasses so young is replacing them, teaching them to wear and take of care of them!
