My 20 month old refers to himself in the third person - is this normal?

Like he will say things like - assuming DS is his name -

DS sit down,
DS stand up
DS drink juice
DS's shoes

the list goes on and on - basically he uses his name instead of "my" or I - he is 20 months - is this normal? How can I get him to understand the concept of pronouns? TIA!

Absolutely, both my kids do it at this stage.

They pick up first person later.

DS rarely says his own name, so I have no idea.

Oh yes. My DD just turned two last week and she still does this. In fact, both my DDs also referred to themselves as "you" for quite a while as well. For example, "Hold YOU." I guess since we always call them "you," it kinda makes sense! Chat Icon

ds doesn't know how to say his own name yet, he refers to himself as "baby"... I think it is totally normal at this stage...

I know it is not the same situation but my dd (26 months), always says "I want to pick you up" when she means "I want you to pick me up" Chat Icon

Very normal...my son just started referring to himself in first person and it's not always consistent. He's very comfortable in third person...which is really cute Chat Icon

Kaitee did this until she was around 2 1/2, when she finally started using 'I' and 'me'.

Yep....think about it?

When you talk to them you will usually speak in the the third person...

Not always of course. But generally that's how we talk to them....

yep. They take a while to learn proper pronouns. When you think of it, it is confusing to call the same thing by different names. Meaning that he is DS in one sentence, ME in another, MY in another, MINE...etc. It takes them awhile to *get* that one thing can have different *names.*
