Music lessons for kids (age question)
DD is 4, doesn't turn 5 until March. She did gymnastics last year and in Fall I want to let her try a dance class. I also thought Karate would be fun for her, but DH really wants to get her into music (guitar or drum lessons). I think she's way too young. Anybody's kids do music lessons and have suggestions as to appropriate age? I know singing lessons should wait until after puberty since undeveloped vocal cords can be damaged when not matured and if treated wrongly. But for instruments I think it just needs to be when a child can focus and follow those kinds of intricate lessons. I didn't do Violin until I was in 4th grade and piano I started around 6th. However, I do see younger kids on youtube playing instruments much younger.
Opinions on appropriate age to begin that?

Music lessons for kids (age question)
I taught violin viola and cello for a long time, and taught very very young kids
I would say piano would be perfect for her age. It's also a great instrument to know if she ever wants to play another instrument.

Music lessons for kids (age question)
Piano is PERFECT to start at that age, my sister started right after she turned 4. Piano is a great first instrument, as it sets the child up for all others (and it's so much easier to learn younger rather than older, I had to take it for school and did horribly at 18).

Music lessons for kids (age question)
DH teaches both drum and guitar lessons. He has kids that start at 5. He is also teaching our 2 year old both right now. DS1 loves to play drums- he counts to 4, keeps a beat, and knows all the names of the different drums. He plays along to songs and keeps a pretty good beat. He knows how to strum a guitar with his hands and pick. DH holds the chords and he can strum a song. So 4 isn't too young. I'm sure a 4 year old can do more than a 2 year old. DS2 is 6 months and hits the drums and strums the guitar too! It's good to start young!

Between 3-4 years old is a great time for them to start lessons/music camp.

Re: Music lessons for kids (age question)
I work with a professional cello player. Her opinion was 6 for string instruments. She started her daughter at that age.

Ok, thanks for the input. I think if anything then we will start her with piano lessons either this year or next and go from there.

Same here. She is now six and is doing great. Check out Huntington Center for Performing arts. They have a great Suzuki program and wonderful teachers. The Suzuki method is geared for young children. They can start at 3. It has a lot of parental involvement so you learn too!
