MSG free diet....help
Hi everyone,
My doc has recently told me that I need to completely cut MSG out of my diet (it was causing me to have heart palps).. It's so hard! From what I've read, MSG has like 10" different names and I feel like it's in everything! Even at trader joes, they claim to be MSG free but after reading Some of the labels in the store last night, I found that a lot of their products had ingredients that have msg in them! Has anyone ever been put on an MSG free diet and do you have any tips? I went food shopping this afternoon and basically just shopped the borders of the store.. Meat, dairy and produce. Basically everything in the middle Is processed and is no good for Me!
TIA for your help!

Re: MSG free diet....help
I'm not on a special diet, but I try to stay away from MSG....I'm curious of what the other names are? In general staying to the whole foods are your best bet. Good luck telling my 3 1/2yo no more goldfish though

Re: MSG free diet....help
I try to avoid MSG completely bc of my migraines.
I always check labels, ALWAYS!
There was an article in the NYTimes a while back that talked about all the different names MSG has and different ways it can be listed on the label.
I basically look for the obvious monosodium glutamate, and also for anything like autolyzed yeast extract or autolyzed anything. I also try to stay away from anything that says hydrolyzed (but I can't remember anymore if this is related to msg, it just sounds bad to me).
You'll get used to knowing what you can and can't eat. Many processed foods are out. No Doritos, goldfish, and some varieties of Tostitos.
One thing I found difficult for a while was finding chicken broth/stock. I go to Wild By Nature and buy low sodium chicken STOCK made by a compnay called Imagine. Best I found. NYT MSG article

Re: MSG free diet....help
Here is an article that has some other names for MSG, such as E 621.
DH can't eat MSG. Or any artificial colours or flavours. I check the label on everything and we have to buy some things from a health food store, like chicken stock.
I just make a lot of foods from scratch. It's better for you anyway.
