Moving with cats
DH and I are moving with our two cats. We are moving from Australia to Germany with them and I am so nervous about them.
One cat is very sensitive and she is already upset about most of the furniture being gone and boxes all over the place.
1st- any advice on plane flights with them? I've never taken animals on a plane. The flight is about 20 hours. They are NOT in the plane with us, but in a cargo area.
2nd- we are going into opposite seasons. It is summer here and we will go straight into winter there. How will this affect them?
3rd- we have a free apartment (with his new job) for two months and then we need to find our own place after that. I know this is a lot for them. How will this affect them?
I've never had to move with animals any advice would be appreciated. I've got Feliway and using sedatives on the plane for them is not an option.
Thanks!

Re: Moving with cats
I have never travelled with a cat but when I moved - the first thing I did was set up her food & litter box. I showed here where they were and let her do her thing. My cat is pretty adaptable so I didn't need to confine her to a smaller space to get her aclimated to the new place but it might be helpful if your cats are skittish or are not eating/using the litter pan.
Good luck with your big move!!

Re: Moving with cats
DH and I moved at the end of September into a bigger coop. It took our cat at least 2 weeks before she was somewhat back to "normal" and not hiding under furniture. It has been nearly 2 months now and I would say she is mostly adapted but she's still a little off....she has become kind of skittish whereas she was never like that before. I was watching a show on discovery? Cat 101 I think it was called and it described different breeds of cat. Apparently some cats are much more adaptable than others. Apparently mine isnt so much...when we move things around she kinda sulks for a day or two...

Re: Moving with cats
Are you allowed to put anything in their carriers? I'd put a used towel or shirt in there for warmth and comfort.
They might hide for a while as they go from one apartment to the next.

Yes, I think I can put stuff in their carriers. I have some shirts I will wear a few days prior and not wash so they have our scent.
I am so worried about them.

I don't blame you, it would make me crazy with worry, too.
Can you ask the vet about anti-nausea meds? One of my cats gets sick just driving across Brooklyn, it might be worth it for a long trip.

Re: Moving with cats
Are your cats going to be quarantined for any period of time or will you be able to bring them right to your new home? I think some countries don't allow animals in unless they are checked out first.
I agree with Christine...set Up their food and litter box right away in an area that they can get comfortable in.
Good luck with the move. It sounds so exciting!

Re: Moving with cats
Since the flight is sooo long I would talk to your vet about giving them something to help them relax but not necessarily a tranquilizer. I would most def put a blanket, towel or t-shirt in their carrier along with a toy that they like. Are they going to be in the same carrier? It may be a good idea to get a carrier big enough for the both of them so they have each other...20 hours is a long time without going to the bathroom or eating/drinking. Is there any other option for getting them there? Have you looked into Pet Air...it is a new airline specifically for pets.
As soon as you land go immediately to your new apartment and set up their food/water and litter box. Let them explore their new surroundings before bringing in all of your stuff.
HTH! Good luck and let us know how the move goes.

Have you looked into the quarantine situation?

Have you looked into the quarantine situation?
Yes. Actually quarantine in Australia is the strictest in the world, so it is a bit easier to go overseas. They are so strict because it is so isolated.
Quarantine in Europe has changed and is under something called the PETS scheme/EU pet passport. England is the strictest, with it being 6 months, but you can do that before you leave. Germany is 30 days, but again that can be done before you leave. What I had to do is make sure their vaccinations are up to date and I had to get a rabies shot at least 30 days before they fly out. Since rabies doesn't exist here, that shot was rather expensive.
I can pick my cats up at the airport and bring them back. .
We've also hired a company that takes care of all customs, paperwork and any other stuff that needs to be done at their stopover in Singapore.
If we ever move back to Australia, then they will have to be in quarantine for 23 days. There is no way around that.
