Moving up in prek
My DD just turned 4 on dec 4th, so currently she’s in a 3 YO class 3x a week for 2.5 hours. I just registered her for 4 YO class next year, but got a call from the director asking if I wanted to move her to the 5 YO class next year, she would turn 5 in Dec, but would be a few months younger than the rest of the kids. Her current teacher feels it would be good for her bc she listens/follows directions and goes with the flow, meaning if they ask her to switch tables, she does, apparently many kids have a hard time with that.
My only reservation is she has a speech delay. While she has a huge vocabulary and her receptive speech is great, her articulation isn’t good and seems to be getting worse. She will start speech services in March, and she should have before this but I was told she wouldn’t qualify for articulation until 4 and I believed them, and I kick myself everyday for not calling back and double checking.
So my long winded message is basically asking what would you do? Hold her back in the 4 YO class bc I’m nervous about the speech, or push her ahead like her teacher suggests? Normally I would push her ahead and just switch if it didn’t work out but the director has let me know the classes will be full come sept, so I won’t be able to switch.

Will the kids in the 5 year old class be going to K when your DD does? If so - I'd try it.
Our daycare moves kids up to Pre-K early - based on age - so both of my boys had about 1.5 years of Pre-K and i think it was beneficial to them to be with older children (except for DS 2 - the class that graduated in between both of my kids was horribly behaved).

Yes, she would be going to kindergarten with the 5 YO, I didn’t think to look at it from that perspective, thank you! This class is basically the kids who just miss the cutoff which is sept 1 where I live.
I’m so afraid of making the wrong decision, I much preferred when I didn’t have to make one for my 2 older kids

Put her with whatever class she'll be going to K with.

Well both the 4 YO and the 5 YO would be going to kindergarten together. The 4 YO class would turn 5 that year then go the following year to kindergarten, just like she will. The 5 YO class is late bdays, kids born right after the cut off date, so would stay 5 all year and head to kindergarten.
Hopefully that makes sense, but both classes will be in Prek one more year (2018-2019) and then head to kindergarten (2019-2020). The only difference is the 5 YO class is a bit more advanced.

I would send her then - she's not that much younger than them and she's going to kindergarten with them and it's a more advanced class.
And she's not much younger - DS 1 has a Dec birthday and he was in Pre-K with kids up to 11 months younger than him.
If it doesn't go well you can always move her back.

I would send her to the 5s if you are not planning on holding her back for K. It may be a good test.
If you are holding her back, it’s nice for her to graduate to another class vs repeat if you are keeping her in same school.
We did a Montessori, which we loved because it had ages 3-6 and the kid could work up to level.

If they are all entering K at the same time, then I don't think it matters that much either way. Don't overthink it. Just put her where you think she fits best now, and only you can know that from her interactions at school.

Re: Moving up in prek
Thank you guys! I was really overthinking it and after speaking more in depth with her preschool teacher today, I’m confident in putting her into the 5 YO class next year!
