moving in on closing date

Hiya,
Another question or conern of ours with closing date is, do we move in this day or not?

We were wondering what is the "norm"? Do most people move in the same day, next day or a few days later.

We are so excited that I think once we have the keys jump in.

what does everyone else think.

Thanks

Re: moving in on closing date

I guess it depends on what time your closing is and how long it takes. IMO I would not do it the same day. I would maybe take the day to just go to the house and clean, figure out where things are going, etc.

Then make moving date for another day.

Good luck and congrats! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: moving in on closing date

We are closing next week and will not be moving in the same day. We plan on removing wallpaper and carpeting then painting and refinishing the floors. We hope to move in about two weeks after our closing date.

It also depends on if the seller's are buyng another house and can get out that day. We had to give the seller's 4 days to purchase the house they were buying and move all their stuff out. We entered into a post-closing agreement where escrow was held and you would do another walk through before getting the keys. If everything is fine you will call your attorney to release the escrow and the house will be yours.

We also didn't move in though right after we got the keys. We ended up painting, removing wall paper putting up molding etc. We moved about 3 1/2 weeks after we closed. We were in an apartment so we moved at the end of the month.

Re: moving in on closing date

I would not plan on it. Our closing was pushed from 10am, to not actually signing the last paper until 5pm. Which meant the paperwork was not processed until the following morning....which meant the insurance was not active until then too.
So it worked our perfect that we got the moving truck for the day after closing. And closing was the 23rd, so we had until the end of the month to be in our apartment & not super rushed to move out and set up in the new house.

We moved in 3 months after we closed. We gutted everything, so it wasn't livable for a while.

Re: moving in on closing date

We slept in the house the night of the closing. We arranged for the bed to be delivered that evening.

I moved in 3 weeks later, my DH officially moved in after we got married 3 months later.

I was hoping to sleep there that night. I wouldn't care if its on an airmattress or the floor. Just so excited to have our first home.

Re: moving in on closing date

We're closing on the 28th. We plan on clearing out our storage unit that day/next day but we won't be "moved in" until after the lease expires in November. Otherwise, we'd still have to give two months notice on the apartment AND pay a lease break penalty of one month. Why bother when we can just keep the place (since we're going to have to pay for it anyway?). It will give us time to get things done. There's a TON of painting/spackling that needs to be done and just cleaning the house overall is going to take me weeks (the former owner was a slob). There's other projects (like getting the floors redone, etc.) that have to be done as well. I'm glad we're not going to be rushed to get in.
