I'm pretty surprised by Middletown/Newburgh, NY. Housing cost and cost of living up there is not nearly as expensive as it is down by me in Rockland County. I don't see how it even made that list. We have family who have moved up that way specifically because the cost of living was lower than it is down here.

I think they have seen large tax increases recently as people flock there to be close to NYC but, pay less. Some of DH's coworkers live there and have been complaining that their taxes are ridiculous.

In case anyone wants to compare cost of living, you can use this site. Link it is the epi.org. I found that where I live in nj costs about 20k less than a comparable area of Long Island. I have to say I agree with the estimates based off of where I looked. I think we live in a really nice area with a school district that is one of the top 40 in the nation, so if you are thinking of moving, it might help youth see how far your money will go.

Most expensive places to raise a family
I went to a conference at the end of July and there were people from all across the country there, and we were talking about our hometowns. I was shocked when the girl from San Francisco told me how much rent was there.

There is no way DC is more expensive than NYC. We used to live in Manhattan and it is significantly cheaper to live down here. Maybe if you factor in Queens, Staten Island and the Bronx. All our friends were saying how crazy expensive Brooklyn has gotten.
I constantly get sticker shock at how cheap things are down here in DC.

It's not more expensive than NYC in general, the ranking is expensive to raise a family... sure, apartments are cheaper in DC than NYC, but I find prices, in general, for things are cheaper when I go home to LI than here (and now I live even further from DC than I used to). I stock up on certain things when I go home
The DC economy, as a whole, is super-strong because of the Federal workforce. It's recession proof and prices never really go down for things because Federal workers can never lose their job or have their pay reduced.
