Re: montreal
I flew to Montreal and was there for 3 nights without a rental car. It's a small city; it was easy to navigate. I forget which hotel we stayed in, but it was in the "New City" and only about 3 blocks from the crossover to the "Old City," which was perfect. Since it is small, I think 3 days is all you'll need. We did 3 days in Montreal and then took a bus to Quebec for 3 more, and had a fantastic week up there.
There is a lot of walking involved. How pregnant are you? DH and I spent 4 days in Boston when I was 32w and I was juuuuust on the cusp of being too tired and swollen to enjoy all the walking. If we'd gone even a week earlier it would have been better.

Re: montreal
You definitely do not need a rental car. Montreal has an excellent public transportation system. Also, just so you know, there is a bus departing from the airport every 10-15 minutes that takes you to the heart of the city and makes stops within very short walking distance of every hotel.
