Moms who started solids at 4/5 months- a few questions...
After cereal, did you start with fruit or veggies?
How much do you start with?
Do you give fruit or veggies 1x or 2x a day?
Do you make your own baby food? If so, what staples would I need to get started?
Thank you!!!

After a week of cereal my ped said do fruits first. I made my own food. Fruit was "lunch" for a month until 5months when I gave veg. At 4 months I did cereal in the am and pm, fruit for lunch. At 5m I did cereal mixed with fruit then for lunch veg/fruit and pm cereal with veg. I started with 1oz (or 1 cube) per serving. I increased as he wanted more.

I was always told to give my kids veggies 1st because once they get the taste of the sweet fruit, they are more likely to turn their nose up to veggies. I am not sure if it is coincidence or not but both my girls are awesome eaters.

Re: Moms who started solids at 4/5 months- a few questions...
I am still giving my DD cereal but will start introducing applesauce this weekend and mixing it in her cereal. After that I will try veggies. I will prob give her fruit for breakfast and veggies for dinner...I will eventually make my own baby food (I hope so--we'll see how that goes) but I heard all you really need is a blender.

TJ's is awesome for organic stuff. I started with apples, bananas, peaches, plums, apricots, mango, papaya.

This is what my ped said as well. He said to start with veggies for that reason, so we did:
oatmeal - 4 months veggies - 5 months fruits - 6 months

We did this too for the same reason. However, once we stopped with purees and moved onto table food, DS hardly will eat any vegetable. Even though he loved it when it was pureed.
And yes, I did make my own. Mostly just boiled or steamed (baked for sweet potatoes) and pureed in a mini Cuisanart then froze them in an ice cube tray.

Thanks ladies!
One more question- What do you use to make your cereal? BM, formula or water?

Re: Moms who started solids at 4/5 months- a few questions...
After cereal, I did veggies first. My theory being that I was afraid of him liking the sweetness of the fruits and then rejecting the veggies. I gave him two meals a day starting from the beginning.
As for making your own food, I have a magic bullet blender that is the greatest thing to me if you're making food either weekly and freezing or daily. I like that it's small. I think, however, that I might start using my food processor to make larger batches that get put in the freezer. I'm a huge fan of frozen, steam in the bag veggies. SO easy to just pop them in the microwave and then in the blender with a little water. I have a ton of reusable tupperware containers in a variety of sizes that I use. The smallest holds 4oz. and then I have the 8oz. and 16 oz. ones with a screw top. I rarely use the 16oz, but I freeze a lot of his food in teh 8oz. and take it out to use it a few days in a row, then the 4oz. I use for popping in my diaper bag if we're going somewhere or sending to my mom's when she babysits. Veggies I buy all frozen with the exception of sweet potatoes and carrots. Fruits I do all fresh, organic when I can. I steam them all and then puree. I use raw avocado and puree that, but sometimes mash it. Bananas I use raw and mash in the bowl. I love making his food for some reason. It's like a weird obsession Let me know if I can answer any other questions. As for feeding, too, I feed him until he turns his head away or seems disinterested. HTH!

Re: Moms who started solids at 4/5 months- a few questions...
We started with fruit. My ped said it didn't really make a difference what we started with. She started with prunes, pears, squash and apples. We started with 1/2 the serving of Gerber stage 1. We did it 2x a day. Now at 6 months she gets it 3 times a day and some oatmeal at dinner and yogurt at lunch. I started making my own baby food and all I did was pull out my food processor and steamer basket. I freeze the food in ice cube trays and defrost a cube for each serving. I have made carrots, pears, apples, spinach, green beans and sweet potatoes and banannas. Next on the list is melon and broccoli. I use both frozen and fresh as long as there is nothing added to the frozen veggies.

Thank you! I didn't even think of the steam fresh veggies!
Have you ever used frozen fruit? I thinking of buying frozen peaches since they are out of season right now.

Re: Moms who started solids at 4/5 months- a few questions...
I mix the cereal with formula.
As far as the order, my ped said to do rice for a week, then oatmeal a week, then barley a week. The rice constipated her though, so I stopped that sooner.
He said after that- and when she had reached her 5 month birthday- we could start veges and fruit. He said to do green veges first, then yellow/orange, then move to fruit. Only because he said sometimes if they get a taste of the sweet they may not want the veges.
ETA- and i use gerber foods. I can barely cook for myself (my dinner is usually cheetos and cookies) so I definitely have no time to be making baby food! Good old fashioned gerber works for me!!!

Quick question---did you notice your DD's cheeks were red/ a little pimply ever since started on cereal. One day it is fine the other day it is red. Not sure if it is an allergic reaction or it's because she CONSTANTLY drools and puts her hands in her mouth and also the cereal could get on her cheeks?
I will def ask her ped...just curious!

DS's cheeks and under his chin is usually red but i think its from his excessive drool lately.
