Moms who make their own baby food...

DS is almost 3 months. We EBF and I do not plan to introduce solids until at least 6 months.

When/where did you start your research on making your own food? Any books to recommend? Do I need anything more than my stovetop steamer basket and food processor? Ice cube trays?

I know no one who does this so I haven't a clue where to begin but my interest is peaked.

I'd appreciate any info!

wholesomebabyfood.com is the BEST website. You can find ALL your answers there and GREAT recipes.

Any books by Annabel Karmel and Ruth Yaron are GREAT references as well.

Agreed. I just use the recipe books I have for ideas... but really it is so easy once you start doing it. When I want a "new" thing to make I look in there.

Also...depending on how large of a batch you want to make...you'll either need a food processor, blender, and/or a magic bullet type thing.

If you're going to make big batches and freeze them, I suggest using the food processor. Just steam the veggie or fruit like you would normally and then add water to get the right consistency. For most you can reuse the water that you steamed with...NOT carrots though...there's a nitrate issue.

I recommend using a blender for peas and string beans...it purees the skins better.

Then, just put into ice cube trays and make sure you have a secure top on them to avoid freezer burn. When they are frozen, just pop out into a ziplock bag and take out cubes as you need them.

It is SO easy and saves you a lot of $$ Chat Icon

Very cool! Thanks! I've taken out five books from the library, a few of which I think were mentioned. I know I have one by AK and it looks really good like I want to eat the foods!!!

I agree with PPs. We also have a food mill, which is good for things like potatoes, apples and pears.

You can do it. It does not have to be all or nothing. I did it as often as I could but I also used jarred foods. The jarred foods sort of helped me to see how the texture should be. I do not even cook and I made my own baby food a lot of the time.
