Moms who have/had babies on Zantac...
How long before it kicked in, if it did at all?
Luke was diagnosed with reflux yesterday and we started him on Zantac last night. Im just curious to see how long it takes to work.
Also, he has a little bit of mucus in his BM's, do you think it could be more than just reflux that is bothering him? I only noticed it yesterday AFTER I got home from the ped.

Re: Moms who have/had babies on Zantac...
Hello,
Chloe WAS a reflux baby until 9 MOS. We had her on Zantac and to be very honest with you, it did not help her at all. She continued to spit up as much. The formula we used was Neocate. Her reflux wasn't painful though at all, just messy:) Good Luck! I hope it works for your baby.

Re: Moms who have/had babies on Zantac...
It helped DS a LITTLE within 24 hours I'd say. I noticed the biggest difference though when the Ped switched him to Nutramigen.

Re: Moms who have/had babies on Zantac...
Zantac didn't do anything for DS. Because of the nature of the meds (H2 blocker vs PPI [ie prilosec]) it shouldn't take long at all. However PPI's are more effective. We wound up just stopping the Zantac because it was causing more harm than good (he would choke and gag on it or spit it out but then didnt want his bottle...guess it must taste nasty in liquid form). I know with adults H2 blockers may cause rebound effects too. Not sure if it was coincidence, but when I was in the hospital because I was sick DH forgot to give DS 1 dose of it and he spit up a lot that day...more than he ever did prior to taking anything for reflux. He's been off of it for a few weeks now and is actually spitting up less, but he could also be growing out of it.

Re: Moms who have/had babies on Zantac...
Mucus in the BM can be a symptom of a milk allergy.
Have you consulted a GI? If Luke is having digestive problems they are the experts. Has your ped. taken a stool sample? I would seek a consult with the specialist and get to the bottom of the issue. If you are in the Babylon area I highly recommend Dr. Gold.
Our LO had silent reflux and needed prescription formula and Zantac....Every child is different and you need to figure out what works for them. Zantac worked for our DS combined with the formula. You just never know....I actually had to stop BF, which is usually the best way to feed a refluxer.
Good Luck
