Moms, tell me about Lloyd Harbor/Lloyd Neck

Hi Moms, We are considering a home in the area and would love some feedback. What do you love/hate about it. We do have kids and know the school district is tops but have concerns about attitude. Is it very pretentious or are there down to earth people as well? Is it a close knit family friendly area? How horrible is the distance if you live on the neck from everything? Thanks so much!

I dont live there but I babysit a little girl who does. I will say it is a beautiful area with beautiful homes. Very private and the scenery is just gorgeous. like you said, the CSH school district is very very good, but basically has zero diversity which I view as something not so good.
Personally I feel that it is not so close knit and family friendly. I mean, the beach is there and Caumsett is there so there is alot to do but I wouldnt say you can stroll around the neighborhood or anything like that. I think most people keep to themselves, maybe unless you have kids in school.
It is a lovely lovely area but the thing that kills me is the fact that if you live on the Neck, it is AT LEAST a 15 minute drive (you HAVE to stick to the speed limit or the cops will get you) to any type of store, which are all in Huntington village or the Southdown area. Then probably another 15-20 min to any parkway depending on traffic etc. It is seriously so annoying if you want to run to the library or a store or whatever. There is literally NOTHING until you hit Huntington village.

I have a few friends who live there, and my parents live there. I know their friends and their kids who grew up the too.

I have to say, most of them are down to earth. There are snotty people everywhere, but I find them extremely community oriented, involved in their district, and very close with their neighbors.

While the homes are nice, there isn't a lot of bling. Very classy and toned down wealth. Maybe because many are from the city, or have old money, but I just find most in this area are not big on showing it off. Guess they don't have to because they all have itChat Icon

I would say if you can afford it, go for it!

Lloyd harbor is where my parents live... Much more convenient than the neck. Once went to a party from my parents house to the neck, and it took forever! I would try to stay close to town if you want. My parents live across the street from the elementary school.....

What a beautiful area! I am not too sure about the people, because I don't live there, but I would imagine it is like most areas....a mix of snotty people and normal people. The people I do know from there are mixed as well...some are very down to earth...livng there because of the beauty of it, while others are there for the status. The school district is great though! The only downside I would say is the distance to any stores. It is a long drive from the neck to Huntington...I think I clocked it at 12 miles when I used to babysit there. I got sick of the drive, and I only babysat. Still is gorgeous though!

We have good friends living in the area. One in Lloyd Harbor and one up in Lloyd's Neck, past Caumsett. We think they are down to earth, but yes, they have money. Kids go to East Woods school. I love the area and would move there if we could afford it!

Thanks for the great responses everyone. They are all very helpful. I am wondering if there is anyone who lives there that can offer some additional insight? Thanks so much!!

I don't live there but we have friends that have lived on the neck for over 20 years - they like it out there - and they are the sweetest family - there are of course nice people and snobby people but that is everywhere - it is a tightnit area and like to stay close - there are a number of private clubs that a lot of the kids spend time at during the summer - and the winter the winter cub is where most of the kids spend a lot of time - the school is not too big so kids can make most sports team - but there is no diversity - but it is a great district -

also one thing about the neck is during a storm and high tide the causeway can flood and you can not get off or on the neck - i got caught with this a bunch because i kept my horse at cuamsett as a kid

Re: Moms, tell me about Lloyd Harbor/Lloyd Neck

my aunt lives in Lloyd Neck (if that is the one you have to cross the causeway to get to)

it's lovely there. very quiet. she has a huge property and the homes are beautiful.

I have no idea how the schools are as she moved there after her children were of school age (she is "new money" Chat Icon ) but it's just a really nice area to live in.

crossing the causeway does make you further away from things, but Hungtingon is reasonably close.

when we leave her house, it takes us about 20 mins or so to get to the highway. that could be a pain if you are commuting.

Just an idea, but since the weather is starting to warm up just a bit...it may be a good idea for you to go hang out in Cold Spring Harbor one day. Grab some lunch, and try to talk to some of the locals there to see how they like living in the area. That way you will get an idea of attitude from different people, and can also get some insight from someone who lives there! Another place would be the library. Maybe they have some activities where there would be other moms who could talk to you about the area!

Thanks Moms for the terrific advice. I was wondering if anyone has kids in the CSH district and their thoughts? Our oldest would be entering seventh grade. The other district we are considering is Harborfields. Any thoughts on comparisons of the two areas, the school districts, the general feel, etc. Why you like/dislike either town/district. Thanks and feel free to FM me!

Re: Moms, tell me about Lloyd Harbor/Lloyd Neck

Sorry, answered above with wrong account......

I'm fairly familiar with both CSH and Harborfields schools. They are both smaller districts in terms of number of kids. They are both very highly ranked and I do believe that the rankings mean something. I went to Harborfields and I don't remember anyone who did not at least start college. It is only now that I am finding out that not all high schools on Long Island are like that. That said, I did not really like going to a small HS. I went on to a big university & loved it. My brother in law is from Lloyd Harbor & from what I have seen of his friends and family, everyone is very unpretentious and most people from there know each other. I've known him for 25 years and it seems that anyone I have ever met from his hometown has said that their families are friends. I don't think he liked growing up so far from things but he doesn't exactly complain about the place!!!!
