Moms of VERY curly haired girls... HELP!

So since I DO NOT have curly hair... I feel that my VERY shirly temple curled DD is at a disadvantage having me as a mommy...lolol. What do I do with it??? She screams her HEAD off when I comb/brush it... it always gets knotty and looks out of control. Any tips? Products? Hairstyles? TIA!!

I dont' have a girl, but my son has very curly, cork screw type curls that we keep long. I just put a detangler in it and use a wide toothed comb to brush it. I do a lot of finger styling with his hair!

Re: Moms of VERY curly haired girls... HELP!

I had hair like that when I was little and my mom has pin straight hair so it was always a struggle

I dont know if they even make this anymore but we always used no more tangles after bath/shower and brushed and braided my hair while it was wet, so in the am when it was time to brush my hair there were hardly any knots

DD #1 has spiral curls. I find that I use conditioner - then when her hair is wet - I use one of those child sprays for tangles - then comb it thru while it is wet - the more I use the easier it is. Then I find she doesn't get as many tangles. I brush it until it is completely straight (it recurls in about 2 mins and gets curlier as it dries - but the knots are gone.) I have stick straight hair so I understand where you are coming from. I think DD#2 is getting the same curls - she has almost no hair yet - but when she gets outside in the heat the little she does have is curling just like her sister's hair used at that length.

Okay coming from the curly haired girl who looked like a hot mess in school. No more tangles is your friend. Use it well. Also finger styling. Curl the curls around your fingers and let is sit for a sec there while it is damp. This will help with definition also might I suggest a children's hair gel to tame frizz.

Re: Moms of VERY curly haired girls... HELP!

My daughter has very curly, shirley temple-like hair! For the longest time, this was me Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon when I would try to comb her hair! Basically, I have it down to a science now. This is what I do.

When I give her a bath, I put the conditioner in her hair, let it sit for a few seconds, and then I use a wide tooth comb to comb the conditioner thru, then rinse it out. My hairdresser told me to use a moisterizing conditioner on her hair, and it has helped!

Now, if your DD is like mine, she wakes up with a rats nest in her hair every morning! Chat Icon Chat Icon Every morning, I use a spray bottle and wet her hair down, then I spray detangler thru it with the wide tooth comb. The ONLY detangler that has worked for us (and trust me, I have tried just about every one out there) is the Circle of Friends detangler. I have only been able to get it at Ulta, but I was just able to find it on Amazon. It is a little pricey- but lasts a long time, and to me, its worth it!

Conditioner & detangler.

ITA

I also comb out Jaidy's hair when it has the conditioner in it. Makes it so much easier. Also when you wash it don't bring it all on top of the head. Wash from the head to the tips, it will knot less this way.

Don't brush it! It breaks up the curls and hurts like heck. Use a ton of conditioner and don't wash it all out. THen if you need to brush it use a very wide toothed comb. Use product.. I find a mouse works best.

I agree with everyone else, but will add that it helps tremendously not to let it get too long. I didn't cut my older DD's hair until she was around 3.5 and it was constantly a rat's nest. After that, SO easy to comb out and now she gets haircuts at least every six months and it's so much easier to deal with.

Re: Moms of VERY curly haired girls... HELP!

my daughter has super curly hair- ringlets like shirley temple as well.

Like PP stated- I always deep condition when I give her a bath... then I comb out while still wet.

In the morning I also spray down her hair with a spray bottle- it cannot be brushed wet or else it frizzes badly.

I put in a little glossing oil or moroccan oil and then let it air dry and it doesn't frizz. I'm a big fan of the 1/2 up 1/2 down "do"
