moms of thumbsuckers...

How do you "sway" your baby not to suck his/her thumb all the time? My boys stopped using pacifiers and now they're OBSESSED with their thumbs. Is there anything I can do to make them less reliant on their thumbs?

Nothing worked for us.

WHen she was older, she stopped for a few months (Princesses don't suck their thumb). She's gone back in full force now.Chat Icon

My DS sucked his thumb until he was about 16 months. Then he picked up a real doozy of a cold and had a hard time breathing and he stopped sucking his thumb on his own....

My DD also sucks her thumb. She is 14 months tomorrow. I have no idea if she'll stop on her own like my son did, but knowing her personality, I highly doubt it. I take it out of her mouth all the time and distract her onto something else. So far, nothing works....

Re: moms of thumbsuckers...

Our pediatrician said not to worry until he's about five or so. They usually stop on their own at that point. DS has really cut back - only does it when he's really tired. There is a product that you put on their thumb that tastes really bad, which is supposed to make them stop, but we haven't tried it.
