Mommies of boys- first haircut

How did you decide it was time to take them for a haircut?? Kieran's hair is crazy long on the sides- if I don't push it behind his ears, it hangs over his ears and just passes the bottom of his earlobes! The back is starting to get a little long too. BUT, he still has that thin little baby hair, it's not like tons of thick flowing hair. My husband HATES his side hair and keeps bugging me to just take scissors to it. But I don't want his first haircut to be mommy and daddy with scissors (call me silly, but that's how I feel!), and I'm sure we won't do a good job. But I wonder if we took him to a barber, he might think we're crazy because it won't be much of a haircut lol. Thoughts??

Re: Mommies of boys- first haircut

that is when I decided - when I was constantly pushing his hair behind his ears...it wasnt even that long...but the sideburns and over the ear hair were unkept...and i never really could tell what direction the hairs went! There was also the beginning of baby curls just in the back...so it always just look like he woke up and had lil back hair frizz....so we went when he was about 21 months old!

ETA: just looked back at my pics...I had the wrong date/age I took him....he was 19 mo when he got his first haircut!

I took DS at 13 months. It was longish and unruly although baby fine and whispy.

I took him to the kids haircut place in the Surnise Mall. They gave lock of hair and certificate. I went there a few times after that too, but we've been going to a regular barber now because they do a MUCH better job!

Re: Mommies of boys- first haircut

I did the over ear lobe cut myself, and now at 18 months he still doesn't REALLY need one, and I can't decide whether to take him!

Re: Mommies of boys- first haircut

My ds had really curly hair - the summer he turned 2 it started getting a little out of control with frizz so for his 2nd bday we had him get a trim.
Then he had another cut right before Thanksgiving and that was a real haircut - i watched his curls drop to the ground :(

It might do his hair a little good to cut it - it may start growing stronger.

When he starting looking like donald trump.

We buzzed him at like 4 months. His hair was curling on the sides, long in the back, thinning in the front. He was a hotmess. He has about 6 haircuts since. The last 2 were at the barber. Before the barber, i would just buzz him.

Re: Mommies of boys- first haircut

we are dabating this now at 8 months...

i would love to wait for one-year but I dont know that its practical. No exaggeration, his hair is 4-5 inches long on this top and hangs down the back of his head. its gets matted and is a PITA to comb out Chat Icon and its painful for him.

i think by the end of this month, we will cut it. no reason for him to be in pain and for me to be frustrated.

Re: Mommies of boys- first haircut

DS is 11 months old and I trimmed the back about 2 weeks ago. He is not even close to needing a real haircut - he does not have much hair on the top and sides, but the back was growing too long - it was a total mullet! I just did it myself. I'm sure it's not the most even, but it took 2 seconds.

Re: Mommies of boys- first haircut

We took DS at a little over a year. His hair is so out of control - It curls up in the back on on the sides. We have a picture of him before the cut one morning where he woke up looking like Wolverine.

It looked cute when it was cut but he looked so grown up. He needs another one now - 16 months - but I just can't. I'm pathetic.Chat Icon

10 months. It was too much. It was so cute sticking all straight up when he was an infant, but it kept coming in heavy and weighing down in his face. We got another one b4 his 1st b-day. He gets a lot of haircuts. LOL

Re: Mommies of boys- first haircut

He was 10 months and it was almost long enough for a ponytail in back. Seriously, it was crazy, over his ears.

He just had another haircut at 12 months too, this time we cut it shorter, so it would have longer to grow out. His hair grows like weeds.

Re: Mommies of boys- first haircut

Sean was 4 months old - he looked ridiculous. My sister is his stylist though - If I had to take him to a place and trust a stranger to do it, I would have waited a bit longer

Re: Mommies of boys- first haircut

I took my older DS when he was 13-14 months. Once we could make a small ponytail we knew it was time to get it cut.

Re: Mommies of boys- first haircut

I cut the sides for a while and I didn't consider it his first haircut. When I took him in believe me.. that was more than I could ever do on my own. They did a lot. He got his first one when his bangs/front were past his eyebrows. He was a baldy and that didn't happen until he was 1.

Re: Mommies of boys- first haircut

I took DS around 10 months for the same reason - my DH didn't like the way his hair went over his ears and was long in the back. I did try to do it myself but, it came out horribly crooked in the back!

The haircut experience wasn't great the first time, I do have to say, the second one went better. I took him to a special kids haircut place each time and nobody made fun of me!
