MMR reaction
My son got the MMR vaccine last week at 18 months. The PA mentioned that he could get a fever 1-2 weeks after its administration. When he got the varicella vaccine he developed a couple of dots that looked like chicken pox. I asked if he would develop a rash and she said he could but fever was the most common. So now he had a couple little dots on him yesterday. This morning while changing him he has them on both legs, couple on his belly, and some on his back. He is acting totally normal, playing, eating, etc. Just curious if anyone else's child got a rash after?

I wish I still had the picture of the reaction my DD had when she got the MMR! Exactly 8 days after she got the shot, she came down with a fever and then broke out in the rash, all over her body, there was not a spot on her that didn't have spots! But she was totally fine and acting normal. I think it bothered me more that it bothered her.

Please be mindful that your child is likely contagious with the measles (not wild, but the vaccine induced genotype). Children who become symptomatic for the measles due to the vaccine can infect elderly, newborns, adults who are no longer immune and those who can not be immunized. Please take precautions.

How long are they contagious for? Until the rash goes away? The dr didnt mention this at all.

My little cousin had a rash and she was about to come to my parents to see my dad who was undergoing chemo at the time. No one knew and once I was made aware she had the MMR I alerted my parents. Anyone immunocompromised and infant too.

My dd isn't allowed near anyone with a compromised immunity for.30.days whether she had a rash or not . My FIL is going through chemo and can't go near dd for the 30 days.

Exactly. This is a live vaccine so it will shed.
It shouldn't affect the majority of healthy people, but those who are immuno compromised shouldn't be around anyone who had a live vaccine

My son's rash looked like an actual measles rash all over his torso and neck mostly - it wasn't like little spots here and there. He looked pretty classic when I googled MMR reaction rash.

Ok, I'm confused. If this is true, how can any child with a young sibling (newborn-one year) be vaccinated? My DD was vaccinated last month, and we have a 5 month old DS.

DD1 got the measles-like rash 10 days after the shot. It seriously looked like measles--mostly on the trunk of her body. She was otherwise fine. No fever. I remember bringing her to the beach thinking people might be concerned (these days, EVERYONE would be concerned if she went out in public like that). It went away after a few days. ETA: My doctor's office never told me she was considered contagious.
She got her booster almost 2 weeks ago (she's 4) . So far so good!

I also thought of this.
Me too! My DD had her MMR when my DS was 1...doctor never mentioned anything about this to me, and DS was in the room when she had her shot

i think the answer you get about how long they will be contagious for depends on who you ask.
I've heard they are most contagious within the first 72 hours of receiving the shot, but i have also heard about it taking a full 30 days.
IMPO, i think its pretty stupid for people to assume that a live vaccine won't shed, not to say that everyone who becomes exposed will get the measles, but it can obviously affect some differently than others.
When I asked my Ped. he let me know that if i gave her the MMR she was safe around everyone, even people who are undergoing chemo because they make the vaccine so that its safe for everyone. I personally don't believe that because there is a lot of info that states facts to the contrary.
But i am curious to know what others have heard...
And, question, my DD has not had her MMR vaccine yet, but nephew just received his last friday. I have purposely been keeping her away from him so that she won't catch anything from him in case he "sheds". My MIL watches my nephew everyday and we live upstairs so they usually play with each other every day for a few hours. This week it hasn't been a problem because of the winter break and my nephew isn't here, but next week, he will be back. Do you think its safe to leave her near him or is there still a chance she might catch something?

My dd got a rash all over her neck a week after getting the MMR. She also got the shot when my ds was 3 months old and there was no issue whatsoever.
