Mixing Wood

What do you all think about having wood in slight different shades in the same room? Ie a light wood with a darker more cherrish wood? Ok or a bad idea?

It's fine IMO. I have an open floor plan and have light wood, cherry wood and a few black pieces. It depends on how you work it all together more that anything. Certain woods I don't see going together like a reddish cherry & a brownish black but many others go nice. In fact I like it much better than too matched up.

That is actually one of my pet peeves.
Most of our furniture is dark wood and our floors are lighter and it annoys me to no end.

i think its fine

wood is organic by nature and not supposed to 'match' all the time. You'll never get different pieces of furniture made at different times by different companies, to match each other.

I'd focus on having all the pieces be complimentary in nature rather than matching.

i have different colors of wood in my dining room (reddish brown floor, cherry and oak sideboard, and dark mahogany dining room set). i think they all work together because they're all warm colors.
but that's just me

I HOPE it will look OK. My kitchen has like a cognac color wood and the DR set we just bought is like a dark espresso.

I think it depends on the colors involved, but it can look fine. We have medium golden-colored wood floors in the living room with dark brown wood furniture, and I think it looks great.
