Mitral Valve Prolapse and Labor
Does anyone have MVP and have concerns about giving birth? I have MVP and in the past few weeks my palpatations have been more frequent which they say is common in pregnancy. I will speak to the doctor about it next week when I go, but I can't help being concerned that the stress of labor is going to cause it to act up more, has anyone dealt with this??

I have something similar, but it's more of like a hole in my heart-I've been feeling the same way I haven't talked to my dr. about it yet either

Re: Mitral Valve Prolapse and Labor
I don't have any heart problems and I have been getting heart palpitations on and off throughout the pregnancy which is normla due to the increase in blood volume....
I would speak to your OB on any concerns you may have but fro my understanding having MVP should not have an effect on your pregnancy, labor and delivery!

Re: Mitral Valve Prolapse and Labor
I have MVP and did not have any complications or problems at labor. I saw my cardiologist while pregnant and he also said not to be concerned. They will monitor you closely during labor and probably also give you IV antibiotics.

I don't have it but all the women on my mom's side of the family but me (my grandmother, mother, aunt, cousin) have had it and they all (except for my cousin) had healthy pregnancies.

Re: Mitral Valve Prolapse and Labor
My SIL has this, she did have a difficult delivery with her first baby, but it was unrelated to the MVP. Her 2nd was a c/section, again unrelated. She's now pregnant with her 3rd (due the day after me!) and her midwife says it isn't a concern, and my SIL isn't concerned either since she's already had 2 babies.

Re: Mitral Valve Prolapse and Labor
I have MVP and was told that it shouldn't be a problem by my prior GYN but I have not asked my OB if that would be an issue. Thanks for the reminder :)

Re: Mitral Valve Prolapse and Labor
I have MVP and my understanding is that it should have no effect on labor and delivery. I have had a slight increase in palpitations since becoming pregnant, but I also know that's normal during pregnancy (even for women that don't have MVP).

I have something like this too (I have a bicuspid aorta w/stenosis), and I was seen by my cardiologist early in my pregnancy, and then was referred to a perinatologist, who did a Fetal Echocardiogram at around 20 weeks to make sure DD's heart was fine (it was!)...then during labor I had to be on an IV antibiotic. No other issues, thankfully!

Re: Mitral Valve Prolapse and Labor
With all of my other preggo problems, I forget all about having MVP! No, I am not worried about it. It hardly affects me, except for bouts of palpatations, but they are not so bad.
