mirror question with car seat

Once you turn the car seat forward do you need a mirror still? Or just look back at them?

I didn't need it. Just by looking in the review mirror I See dS. If we are stopped, i quickly just turn to look at him.

I never used a mirror with DS and he's still rear facing. So you definitely don't need one for foward facing. I don't even know how that would work.

I never used one rear facing either.
I remember reading somewhere they are not safe in an accident.

How old is your first? The bare minimum recommended age to turn foward is two years old but they are much safer remaining rear facing past that.

They are technically not recommended because they are considered an after market product and can become a projectile in an accident.

With that said though, as a parent and a technician I see both sides of it. They have lightweight soft sided mirrors (brica makes one for example) that clip on to the top tether making them possibly less of a risk.

I just never did because someone always sits back there with her.

She's 6 and still we fight who gets to sit back there with her. The drives when we are solo with her then obviously we just look back.

Don't see us changing.

I tell you 6yrs has FLOWN by. Glad to spend every extra minute with her that I can.

No, that's an old recommendation. The recommendation now is a minimum of 2 years old before you change to FF.

the bare min depends on the seat. the age is strictly a recommendation.

The bare minimum recommended age is two, NY law states proper use of seat....the majority of the seats right now on the market are 1 & 20. (There are a few that are higher, and soon there will be seats that state no Foward use until a minimum of two years old)

BUT.....with that said...

NY law was written in 1984 so 30 years ago when it was written it was great for the time. Now, not so much.

Research has proven that rear facing until a minimum of two is over 500 times safer and extended rear facing until the maximum limits of the seat is even safer. A babies neck muscles and bones are just not well developed before then and an accident, even a minor one, can cause a sever injury.

I received one but never used it.

I think it's very distracting to watch your kid while driving. I do city and highway driving, so I have 100% concentration on the road.

What kind of useful info does it yield? As long as they have no food or drinks, there is no choking potential and I don't care if they are awake or asleep.

I do mostly solo driving with kids, have nothing around the seats, and refuse to give them anything. They have been trained this way since birth & it works really well.

I just don't understand the fascination people have to forward face so soon. To me, it wasn't any easier or harder to have them rear face. And if it's even a TINY bit safer, why not??

because people have all sorts of reason outside of just because of safety in a crash. There have been parents on here with screaming children and kids that have been car sick. So in the end you have to make a decision based on what is the best situation for each individual case.

So IMO driving with a screaming kid or one that is puking when they are rear facing you need to make a personal decision to change them then that is perfectly fine IMO and that choice should not be questioned millions of times on here nor told its illegal.

People should know that the law is just in an appropriate seat and you would not be breaking the law and after that do what in their opinion is the best for their situation.
