Mirena
Hi ladies...please tell me the good, the bad and the ugly of Mirena the IUD. My doctor is telling me one thing, but online reviews are saying another. I'm nervous about it. Thanks in advance for your honestly.

Re: Mirena
I had the copper one for about three years. At my last annual, it was out of place so they had to remove it.
The good: -No taking pills -No hormonal side effects -No worries
The bad: -Heavy periods, especially in the first few months and I had super heavy periods towards the end, although I'm not sure if it was because of it being out of place -exDH sometimes "felt" it during sex -bad cramping -insertion suckedddddddd
Overall, I liked it and would do it again. Just haven't decided too and since my periods were so heavy, my gyno wants me to do the mirena next. One of my good friends has it - no period at all. She loves it!

Re: Mirena
I have had it for 3 years and am very happy. It hurt going in, but it was quick (less than a minute tops). I did have a lot of cramping afterwards, and the spotting was insane, like more than 6 months. My doctor encouraged me to wait it out and I'm glad that I did. I have no periods now (haven't for 2.5 years) and love not having to worry.

I have it and I like it. I do still get my period, which I was hoping wouldn't happen but I only get it for 2 days.
I wanted my tubes ties but my OB said she would prefer I wait and not make such a permanent decision immediately after going through the pregnancy from hell. Soooo this was the next best thing.

Re: Mirena
I thought about it but it's still hormonal so that's a con. Has the same risks as hormonal bc. I have heard quite a few stories of it failing and people getting pregnant on it. Scared the shit out of me. Also...not getting a period would freak me out...i need that period to know i am not pregnant

I'm considering getting it. I've heard good and bad. I was on the pill for many years and hated it so I'm willing to try it! I've also read about Paraguard which I think is non hormonal so I may look into that more!

I had two insertions of mirena, each lasting 5 years. Yes, it hurt going in and coming out but that pain was nothing compared to the benefits for me. I had no period for 10 years. Never any cramping, loved not having to worry about bc.

My gyn suggested it to me last week but I've been on the fence. I haven't been on a bc in nearly 6-7 years but my periods have been coming every 14-20 days (and heavy!). I just can't live life like that. But this sounds like either I'm going to get just as heavy as a period or none at all - which also freaks me out. I just can't see personally how that is good lol.

I don't believe Mirena makes a 'copper one' which a poster said above. I think that's a different type and brand of IUD. There are several on the market.
I had a Mirena and LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVED it. It hurt going in but so very worth it. My periods stopped after 3-6months. They lighten up so that I spotted a lot which was so annoying but then again they stopped so that was so worth it too.
I spent 4yrs without a period at all and when I went to replace it they gave me the Skyla. Which is the Mirena replacement and is only good for 3yrs. It's supposed to be smaller and thinner but it was still painful for me to be inserted. But I'm still period free. I will ask to go back on Mirena when this is up because why go through pain every 3yrs when I do can it every 5yrs? Besides at the end of this 3yrs I'll be about 43-44 and if I get another 5yrs I hope to be near menopause and off periods all together naturally.
My whole aim. Not to have periods. bonus, no kids. woot!

That's not totally true, the hormones don't go "through your system", it's a local hormone that goes into your uterus and that's it so it much lower risk than birth control if hormones are your concern.
I LOVE my Mirena. Took me awhile to get to the "barely any period" point but I'm there and it's great.
The only con I can think is that I miss the acne-fighting aspects of the pill. I occasionally get small breakouts once a month now.

Good to know However I'm over 40 so I dont' want any hormones - just too risky at this age. Plus the not getting a period would freak me out. I actually like getting my period believe it or not. I've never had an issue with it and it's the best feeling in the world to know for sure you are NOT pregnant!

This.
Also, it didn't really bother me going in.
The hormones are so very slight, so that is not much of a concern for me.

I looked it into as well after our second child, but in the long run decided against it. I was reading too many negative experiences from people. I think what closed the decision for me was that I would have a foreign object in my body that had no business being in my body for that long. What are the consequences of that down the line? I didn't want to find out. I take a pill.

Luckily I still become a bitchy pimply-faced witch once a month to tell me I'm not pregnant
