Milk question and bottle question

My DS just turned 1 year...

He has 3 7oz bottles of milk a day in between meals. With meals, he drinks water out of a straw sippy. He will NOT drink milk out of the straw sippy. He only wants water in his straw sippy - which he has been using since 7 months.

He also has a yogurt per day and a small serving of cheese per day..

My two questions are:

1) Are the 3 7oz bottles of milk per day, the yogurt per day and the cheese per day too much dairy? I know the doc said he needs 20-22 oz of milk per day, hence the 3 bottles, but I was wondering about the milk + yogurt + cheese...

2) The doc also said to try to wean him off the bottles and put milk in the straw sippy... anyone else think 1 is too young to stop a bottle? And since he won't take milk out of the sippy... the bottle is the only way to get him his recommended daily serving...

What do you think?

DD's doctor told us 18-24 ounces of milk a day - when I asked about the cheese and the yogurt, she said that was fine.
So DD (15 months) gets 3 7/8oz sippy cups of milk a day since she has been 12 months old.
DD has been on a sippy cup since about 11.5 months. I was thrilled to get rid of the bottles! DD hated the bottles and took 2 hours to drink 6 ounces from the bottle
I know people who have started sippy cups much earlier so personally, I do not think a year is too young to drop the bottles but it is everyone's personal choice

The older they get, the less milk they need in their diet. When they were younger they got most of their nutritional value from the bottle, but once they are on solids they really dont need as much milk. The 3 7oz bottles, plus cheese and yogurt is a good amount of dairy per day IMO. You could probably even do without the yogurt and still be fine.

My DS is 2 and we JUST got him off the bottle several weeks ago. We let him go too long though. At 1 you should try to start weaning him off the bottle, but dont worry too much if he's still taking a night time bottle. I would start by cutting the morning bottle out and replacing it with a sippy.

Maybe try putting milk in a regular sippy (not the straw kind) for milk? See if he'll take that first. I know my DS took quite a while before he would drink milk in a sippy but eventually he did it.

drop the bottles ASAP, imo! The more I read about them, the more I believe it has everything to do with hindering speech development.

This is what I did with DS. He went from saying no real words at 12m to speaking in sentences at 16m.
We also dropped the paci around this time. Its just an example and not all babies are the same, it might help you to learn what I did.


At 12m DS refused milk in a sippy. I only offered straws. He had 3 bottles a day (our ped told us to knock it down to 3 6oz bottles) morning afternoon night

So, first I replaced his morning bottle with a sippy and milk, if he resued the milk, I had a water sippy ready and a yogurt.

In a few days, he finally started taking some sips, in a week he was drinking 4oz.

Next I replaced the afternoon bottle with sippy. He adjusted to that the same way as morning one. I offered him cheese or yogurt if he didn't drink milk.

Next night bottle, if he didn't want the milk, he wouldn't have gotten water. But he never refused it after all I did.

Also keep in mind, they need only 2 servings of dairy from calcium a day. Just make sure they are getting a varied diet, they really don't need that much milk, if at all.

Also too much milk/dairy causes Iron Deficiency

At 12m refused milk in sippy, even refused milk some days

At 15m drinking less than 2 cups

At 18m, gulping down 6oz at each cup, and asking for more. (we are having eating issues, he wont eat, so he asks for more milk )
