Milk in Bottle ? (sorry so long)

Our ped told us at DD's 1 year appt NOT to put milk in the bottle...only the sippy cup. He said that it was time to start weaning her off her bottle and by putting milk in her bottle it will only encourage her to drink from it. He wants her to have 8 - 16 ounces of whole milk a day from her sippy cup. Which she uses her sippy but there is no way she drinks 8 - 16 ounces from it a day.

I am upset bc we are so ready to start taking her off of formula. We are not ready to take her bottle away from her, she just turned 1 and she really only takes her bottle before naptime and bedtime. We already decided that after the Holiday's we were going to start weaning her off. We really want to just put milk in her morning and afternoon bottle and formula at night, but when i suggested this to our peed he straight out said "No". We just do not know what the right thing to do is?

Re: Milk in Bottle ? (sorry so long)

Maybe try a few different sippy cups to find one that she will drink more out of.

I never put milk in a bottle. My first DD was off the bottles at 12 months and we switched to whole milk at 12 months too.

My second DD is almost 12 months and she hasn't had a bottle in almost 3 weeks. We just started giving her some milk and everyday she seems to drink a little more, she hated it a few weeks ago.

I put milk in the bottle. We started taking one bottle away at a time. So after two weeks we only have a bottle at night. The first couple of days I would start with a sippy cup in the morning and if he didn't drink a lot of it I would pour the rest in the bottle. I only gave him a sippy cup at lunch. Whatever he drank he drank. Now we only have to get rid of the nightime one.

My son has been using the Nuby No-Spill Sippy for a few months now for watered down juice. I will try milk in there when I feel he is ready. We just transitioned to milk a week ago and he is drinking like a champ. I didnt want to change to milk and take the bottle away at the same time.

I say you are the mommy and you know whats best for your situation. If you feel she needs to be on the bottle longer than keep her on it.
You can really start introducing sippys now with milk at solid feedings and see how she does. Then eventually move all the way over.
Take your time and so what is right for her.

Re: Milk in Bottle ? (sorry so long)

I say listen to your heart and listen to what is right for you and your child. You are the parent and its your decision. In my opinion your ped has no right to flat out tell you No!. There is nothing wrong with not taking your child off the bottle at 1 yr old. If you are not giving the bottle in the crib no harm can come from it. I do think you should definately give at least some sippys with Milk b/c I did not do that - no one told me to and I didn't think of it on my own. So DS was on a bottle til 2 yrs old (which I had no problem with - nor did my ped) I took the bottle away at 2 yrs old without to much fight (we "gave" them to our friends baby and DS was fine with it) but that is when DS stopped drinking milk. Now he gets calcium from other sources and only has milk in his cereal.

Again, I say you know what is best for your child and your family.

Our dr never mentioned anything about getting off the bottle. We've tried introducing sippy cups here and there and he just plays with them. Ds is 13 months and we have no interest in pushing him off the bottle right now.
