Midwife?

Do a lot of people use them? I'm clueless. Do you use one instead of an OB or in addition to? Can someone tell me what it is that they do?

Re: Midwife?

I see a midwife. They do replace and OB as far as pre-natal care & delivery. They generally have a more natural outlook on pregnancy & childbirth & most people find there care to be more personalized.

Re: Midwife?

I'm using a midwife practice in place of an ob/gyn. They're affiliated with an ob/gyn, if there are any complications they can send me over to him or consult with him via phone. It really depends on the situation. If the ob/gyn was to come into the picture, I would use both. HTH!

Re: Midwife?

i'm using a midwife as well and they replace the ob unless any major complications arise in which case they work with the ob either for the time it's needed or throughout the pregnancy.

Re: Midwife?

I see a midwife. I had been using them before pregnancy for my regular gyn exams and just continued to use them for my pregnancy.

My practice also has ob-gyn's as well and will be at the hospital during delivery should their be any complications.

The midwives are good if you are having a low risk pregnancy. They are definitely very nurturing. I have been having a good experience with them.

Re: Midwife?

I would be seeing a midwife instead of an OB, but b/c of some medical reasons, I need to have an OB as my primary care. However, I hope to be able to have a midwife as some part of my pregnancy.

Basically, midwives specialize in low-risk births. They view the pregnancy as a natural condition, rather than a medical condition.

The link below was a post I put up a few months ago. I was clueless about midwives. If I was eligible, I would definitely see a midwife.

Re: Midwife?

my OB has a midwife on staff, and I think I will be seeing her at some of my appts (as she may deliver me depending on schedules)......I don't have to choose between the two (unless I had a preference), so I get to work with both the OB doctors on staff and the midwife. I've heard she's wonderful from my SIL, so I'm eager to meet her! (I changed OB doctors).
