Re: Micro-Manager bosses

I used to work with one...trust me I tried to live with it and I only lasted a little over 2 years. It got so bad I had to quit my job with no new job! It was that bad. This was in October 2002 and I still have nitemares about her.

If I learned anything, its not take anything personally, this person has internal problems.

Re: Micro-Manager bosses

Omg ... if you look up micromanager in a dictionary, I'm SURE my boss's picture will be there.

We used to have to give him a daily typed report of what we did everyday - on top of the fact that he got automatic emails whenever we handled trouble calls (I'm in tech support) so he knew exactly what we were doing anyway!! Chat Icon

How did we deal with it? Well...we are a small dept of about 7... we joined together, revolted, and brought HIS boss into it. Had a big meeting and had some major things changed. The daily reports became weekly reports and he was told to take it easy on the phone calls and the paging (yes we have to wear beepers too Chat Icon ) It was so bad that if she didn't do anything (his boss), we already had the union ready to go.

Re: Micro-Manager bosses

I have to do the daily reports Chat Icon It's actually a weekly plan made on Friday for the following week, then each day I email it to my bosses with updates and notes.
Whenever I email anyone I have to Cc one of my bosses (depending on the subject which one gets it.)
And many times when I have to do make a decision, even when I know the decision I have to say "I'm doing this, OK?" and then do it.

I honestly hate it, but the pay is really good and I have a lot of freedoms - long lunches when I want, days off when I want, leave early, come in late, etc ... plus I never work past 5 p.m. (maybe 2x in 5 years) so it's been hard to find something else like that .... especially now that I have a husband and I like to be home and do things with him. I value my free time a lot ...

My immediate boss is terrific but occasionally I have to do work for one of the owners and they defined the meaning of micro-manage and beat a dead horse. Thankfully, I don't work too closely with them frequently enough to be an issue.

Re: Micro-Manager bosses

I have two. It was really difficult to get used to..when I first started, I was not used to having to tell my boss whenever i completed a task that they asked me to do. It took some time (probably about 2 years) for us to compramise..I had to learn how to continue to tell them the status of every single little thing, and they had to learn how to consider things done when they give it to me. Re: Micro-Manager bosses

If you look micro-manager in the dictionary... she's right there next to Baby Avacados!!

I worked with her for 2 and a half years and I couldn't do a THING with out her knowing. She had to be cc'd on EVERY email I sent out and I was not allowed to make one decision on my own. EVERYTHING had to be run by her. And God forbid I did do something on my own she would chew me out! I wasn't even allowed to speak for myself! I had to give her all my ideas and she would re-iterate them for me! One thing I can say is that she would give me credit where credit was due... but it was just ridiculous that I could never give my ideas she had to do it for me!!!!

Re: Micro-Manager bosses

I have one now. I've been here a little over 3 years but I'm putting together my resume. I'll stay until the summer time but then I'm OUT. It keeps getting harder and harder to deal with him because we're a small firm and getting smaller, so there are fewer people for him to disturb. He's supposed to be a lawyer but I seriously think he prefers being an office manager and a secretary. Chat Icon

I have one.. I think he is. He is terrible, I think he is insane. I cannot do anything without him breathing over my shoulder, going through my desk, following me around he is insane. I have no thoughts because he doesnt allow me to have them. Anyway I have lasted there 15 months. I am actively looking for a new job, before I lose my mind.
