Metaformin...side effects

It can cause some stomach distress. It is not really good for you at all. If you can try to control it with diet as well as a natural supplement calleed Berberbine you will be better.

It can cause a little diarrhea but thats it, I've taken much larger doses and never ever had an issue.

Re: Metaformin...side effects

I've been on it for 2-3 years now to manage my pre-diabetes. I take 500mg 2x a day - and only recently am experiencing some stomach issues over it (I think its because my Dr switched me to an ER (Extended Release) tablet. My first side effect was actually mild constipation (easily dealt w/ by increasing fiber or taking Metamucil).

Metformin has actually protective effects against certain cancers and cardiovascular diseases (all research studies have proven lower mortality rates among Metformin users than non-users). Because it helps the pancreas metabolize sugar more efficiently, it decreases the overall sugar load on the body. Also, I have noticed that being on Metformin helps me maintain my weight (my dad is on Metformin as well and he actually lost 10lbs over a year after he started taking it).

Thank you for the info, I wonder why your on it 2x a day for just PRE-diabetes but I am 1x a day for the real Diabetes? What was your A1C, I was 6.8 this last testing.

Wow - just looked this up - lots of positive reviews - I guess I should ask my Doc. before switching from Metaformin ?

I was on the lower dose (500mg 1x/day) for a long time but there were 2 A1C tests that showed a spike (I was at 6.1 when diagnosed and after surgery, I went up to 6.7), so my endocrinologist increased it. I was on the 1,000 mg/1x a day but noticed stomach issues right away so went back to the 500mg/2x a day dosage.

My last A1C test (August) showed a drop to 5.6 so when I see my Dr next month, I will ask her if I should drop my prescription back to 500mg 1x a day. I can't get of the medication completely until I get my weight down - my BMI still has me on the high end of the Overweight category. Since I am post-menopausal, preventing weight gain is 10x harder so its a constant struggle.

Metaformin...side effects

500mg per day wasn't very noticeable about effects.
At the same time though, i'm more aware of A1C levels and what I need to do to keep it down and lower it. I was doing a diabetic health pack that costco sells but the most important thing you can do is know what you can and can't process.

Metaformin...side effects

I was taking it for my gestational diabetes for 1.5 weeks. I had gastro discomfort the whole time then had a day where I had the runs all day and could not function. This was the long acting one once a day. I went off of it.
