Merrick?
Can anyone tell me if all parts of Merrick are nice with good schools? A friend of mine just moved near the merrick train station- seems nice enough around there but her kids aren't old enought to go to school yet.
How is the merrick train line? Do you have to transfer at jamaica?

Merrick?
I grew up in North Merrick - North of Jerusalem Ave, East of Merrick Ave. I went to N. Bellmore schools for elementary and Bellmore-Merrick CHSD for middle and high school. If you go south of Sunrise and especially south of Merrick Rd, you're looking at very expensive homes. North of that is nice as well but not nearly as expensive. I LOOOOVVVEEEDD my house growing up. There are areas of Merrick that are west of Merrick Avenue that border Roosevelt though. But honestly, you'd never know unless you cross over the Meadowbrook.
The Merrick station is on the Babylon line which IMO is the best of the lines since it's pretty much all elevated and runs very frequently. It's a straight shot to Penn.
Merrick town has a lot shops and restaurants. Neighboring Bellmore as well.

Re: Merrick?
Merrick is a great area. I live in N. Bellmore (next town over).
Merrick has 2 elementary school districts - 25 (Merrick) and 29 (North Merrick). Elementary schools go K through 6, and then for grades 7-12, Merrick is part of the Bellmore-Merrick Central district -- everyone in Merrick goes to Merrick Ave Middle School and then either Kennedy or Calhoun High.
The dividing lines for the elementary schools are right around the train station. Is your friend north or south of Sunrise? If she is south of Sunrise, it's definitely SD 25. North of Sunrise could be 25 or 29 (or there's a part of Merrick Woods that is zoned for school district 4 - N. Bellmore).
Commuting by train is great - straight to Penn and lots of express trains. I used to commute from Bellmore and the train ride was 43 mins to Penn. I think it's like 39 mins from Merrick if you take an express. Merrick is on the Babylon train line, one of the most desirable for commuters. It's convenient to the parkways, too, and near lots of parks and beaches.
I think Merrick is a great value, esp. for families with young kids.

Re: Merrick?
If your friend moved near the train station she should be sending her kids to chatterton. I work in that school district as a custodian but not in Chatterton. I work in Lakeside.

Re: Merrick?
I think Chatterton is for everyone north of Sunrise, though. If she is near the train but south of Sunrise, could be Birch Lane. But I am never sure of the exact dividing lines without calling the district.
