Merrick

How is this area? How are the schools? Saw a house for 289,000 all renovated inside. Looks niceeee. Don't know much about the area

Where in Merrick? There is Bellmore-Merrick School District which is excellent but that's where the "well off" people live Than there is N. Merrick School District where I live which is a beautiful area with middle and upper class.

IMO regardless of where you live in Merrick, it is a great town. But taxes are super expensive.

I know that house.. It's on Stuyvesant.. it's a small house and right by the train station.. I often park on that street when i can't find parking anywhere else..

You really can't go wrong with any part of Merrick to be honest. ;)

I am living in Merrick now while my house is under construction.

Area is nice. SD is good from what I hear. Taxes are SUPER HIGH though.

I think the house is great and being by the train station is also good for resale. My only concern would be that it is 2 bedrooms but if you can build on to the house then it's def a steal!

I have a friend who grew up on that street.

The house is in the Merrick School District for elementary and the kids would go to Chatterton.

Bellmore-Merrick is the middle school and high school district and the kids would go to Merrick Ave Middle School and Calhoun.

We just bought and are renovating a house in South Merrick. From what I know you can't go wrong with any part of merrick. My only concern would be that you would hear the train from the house...

Do me a favor and DON'T buy a two bedroom house.

It's very difficult to sell a two bedroom house in Long Island, unless you are priced CRAZY cheap. Not something I would get myself involved with in this RE market.

We're in Wantagh but looking in Merrick. We're also close to the train and I think it's a plus because we commute into the city for work and don't have to park in the lot. I would think twice about a 2 bedroom house but for that price if there is room to add on I'd jump on it!

That is my main concern. Originally, I told hubby it has to be 3 bedroom at least to consider it. Because we're going to have kids so if we have a boy and a girl, we're set and could still live there. But if it's 2 bedroom and we have boys and girls, we are screwed and would have to buy something new, and with this economy and market, that is scary! Plus, I know it would be a lot harder to sell.

Im going to look and see if another room can be made anywhere. It's been on the market since 2009 and started in the mid 400,000s. I bet the 2 bedroolm is making it so hard to sell because the kitchen is really nice.. all renovated. I drove by today. No backyard which Im sure also lowered the cost.

grrrrr wish it was 3 bedroom! Thanks for your input ladies.

From where the house is located - that would put your kids in Birch Elementary which is a few blocks from where that house is. I'm not 100% on this, but since the house isn't south of Merrick that is what I am assuming. Birch is an excellent school. I actually work in the Merrick school district but not in Birch. I work in Lakeside Elementary.

If you want to get into Merrick for not a lot of money and you dont mind buying a small house then I would say go for it. As ave says a 2 bedroom home is very hard to resell, but if you plan to stay there or possibly expand in the future then it may be worth it to you.

Merrick is a very nice area, but the taxes are very high.

Looks like a great deal to me, especially when you consider that it was listed at 450k just a little over a year ago.

Rach I was going to post that earlier today but I was busy.

I think it's closer to the LIRR than our house. You will hear it louder on a clear night.

You have to drive and see it - check it out and see for yourself. That's the best way for you to determine.
