Men and Books
I had this discussion with my DH the other day. It was related to a topic from my class. It is a Public Services for Young Adults Class. The topic was that men/boys prefer to read non fiction while women are more likely to prefer fiction. Do you find this to be true and why?
My DH said that its true for him. He likes reading things he can relate to and are about things he is interested. He doesn't like things that don't seem real to him.
I like things that are interesting but can be an escape and can entertain me and educate me at the same time. I prefer fiction but I do like non fiction such as biographies.

Re: Men and Books
I'm not sure if I should have put this in the book board. But it seems like it belongs in both spots.

Re: Men and Books
My DH tends to read more non-fic on topics related to politics and the economy, because that's what he does for a living. But he also reads a good amount of fiction. We're both big readers. When we're on vacation we both tend to read fiction.
I like non-fic too, but it has to be well-written, not dry. I love biographies in particular.
My male students (6th grade) tend to read probably a little more non-fic but if something's "trendy" they will go after it. I.E. all my Narnia books are GONE at the moment.
Boys also tend to love graphic novels.

Re: Men and Books
I find it to be true too.
Most of my male friends prefer non-fiction. DH reads biographies, history and political books, etc. He said he finds fiction to be a waste of time because its "not useful". He likes to debate with his friends so his reading is used to back up his theories.
I read mainly historical fiction with an occasional fiction book thrown in. I prefer the story lines over dry facts. I spend time with my friends, talking about what's going on in our lives, etc.
Gender difference I suppose but I'm not sure why...

My DH likes to read fantasy books. They seem to be the only kind he enjoys.

Re: Men and Books
My DH loves to read - fiction as much as nonfiction. He went to B&N yesterday and came home with 3 of each.

Re: Men and Books
I have never seen my husband read a book, he just doesnt like it... I assume it is because his parents dont read books and they have never passed the love of books to their kids...

Re: Men and Books
That is certainly a big factor. My parents love to read and they passed their love of reading to me. I know my FIL reads a little bit and my MIL doesn't read too much so that could also be why my DH doesn't read a lot.

Re: Men and Books
when I was small Poland was a communist country so the times were pretty tough... honestly the only libraries that I remember were the ones owned by schools and the books had to be approved by the government... so a lot of the books we read were classics written by Polish and Russian authors...

Most of the men I know are not big readers, but my uncle reads a lot, and I think he reads more fiction. Of course the stuff he reads is mostly Tom clancy and Robert Ludlum type stuff.

Re: Men and Books
DH reads a lot. I think definitely more since we got married--I try to have nights where we don't watch TV, since sometimes it becomes all-consuming. He just finished The DaVinci Code, and loved it, but also just finished the baseball drugs one--I forget the name--but that was non-fiction. I read mostly fiction, but don't read as much for fun as I'd like to with all the reading I have to do for my doctoral program.

Re: Men and Books
Well, DH likes both. My dad seems to read mostly fiction. But FIL seems mostly to like non-fiction, as does my brother and my uncle. I'm generally not big into non-fiction, maybe once in a while.

Re: Men and Books
my DH prefers to read things that make him think or have a religious/philosophical base. He LOVED DaVinci Code. He reads alot of CS Lewis, anything theological.
Plus SI, Maxim....and people magazine
