Meet Up question

has anyone ever joined a group through Meet Up?
if so, how did it go?

i'm asking because since i moved to CA i have not had any luck in finding a local knitting group to join. i found one through Meet Up, but they ask for you to pay at each gathering for "Meet Up fees." i was wondering if that's the norm.

I think it depends on what type of group it is. I have definitely seen groups ask for money for materials or what not.

Not only did I join, I started my own. I've met some of my best friends through it.

Re: Meet Up question

I joined a Moms group for a short time. It was free but I think they had sponsors that covered the meet up fee, but they did charge for certain activities - and it seemed like they overcharged for simple things like crafts, so that was probably part of the general meet up fee.
This group was pretty cliquey, and not very welcoming, but I'd imagine a knitting group may be a little different. I probably wouldn't join another mom group, but for a specific hobby I'd try it again.

Meet Up question

I've made some great friends through meet up, but every group has it's own "feel." I think the organizer has to pay Meet Up an annual (or monthly) fee. Some pass that fee on to members, others don't. It' definitely not unheard of

sometimes they charge, ask what the fee is for.

Sometimes when they charge for every event as they are looking for make money off if it, from what I know.

Sometimes they ask if you want to chip in for the cost for them to advertise.

I dont like to have to pay for every gathering so its not often I'll take part in too many that have it set up that way.

If they hold weekly or monthly events and are charging for it, then they are looking to make off of the event IMP. The cost to advertise for 6 months is not that great, and after charging people for a few events its covered,

Meet Up question

I've been a part of several meet up groups. Some require membership fees while others do not. Some groups I have loved and others were not for me. I say go try it out and see for yourself!!

ok. you've convinced me to give it a shot. i won't know if they're the group for me if i don't go. the more i read their calendar, it looks like the "official" weekly gatherings are the only events to have a fee. all others (mostly hosted at people's houses) are free.

ok, i'm off to meet new people!

I've joined meetup groups and in fact ran one for a little while too! Lots of groups charge fees, one it's not free to the organizer to have a group and two, it encourages people who are serious about going to events, instead of flaking out. But the fees they ask you should be nominal. Im my group I think we asked $7 for the whole year. Have fun, I met a lot of good friends from meet up!
