Medical Insurance FYI

I know that insurance can be a PITA- so maybe we can share some tips on things to make sure you have in order before baby comes.

I called my provider and made sure that my preapproval for delivery (including hospital stay) was already approved and on file. I wanted to make sur ethat there was NOTHING I had to do with my medical insurance while in labor!

I also confirmed that the entire hospital is covered, so it doesn't matter which anesthesiologist I use. Otherwise, you may want to make sure you don't get an assistant to do the actual injection.

And I just called ot ask about adding Chat Icon - is there a deadline? Does he need to be added on his date of birth in order to be covered? They confirmed that I have 30 days to add him, but to do it ASAP or the claim will be denied and have to be resubmitted. His coverage will be retro dated to his DOB. Who wants to deal with this stuff with a 2 week old? Glad I called, I will have DH get the paperwork ready now!

ETA- please add your insurance tips!

You might need to wait for the birth certificate and/or SS #.

Re: Medical Insurance FYI

My employer sent paper work for Dr. to fill out and send in, I had to call Met Life (disability company) when my baby was born so my FLMA would start. As for insurance you do have 30 days to add him on to your insurance so its not a rush, its just a phone call. I had to send a copy of the B.C to my employer when I got it.
Dont stress over this, its a common everyday sinerio for insurance co. depending on who you have it could be a seamless experience... contact your HR rep they are very helpful.

Re: Medical Insurance FYI

I had my insurance phone # with me in the hospital so as soon as I had the baby (well maybe a few hours after) my DH called and let them know I was in the hospital and had the baby. The hospital had actually already notified them.

The next day when DH went to work he contacted his benefits provider and they added DD to our insurance. They did not need the birth certificate or SS# right away. They said when we get them to notify them.

Also when I took DD to the ped after getting out the hospital I was worried about not having an insurance card and the ped advised me that they submit it under my insurance. I'm not sure if this is the same with every ped or insurance company but we have Empire BCBS and that's what they do until DD is officially added to the insurance.
