Stricken Southwest jet returns to Islip
BY JOHN VALENTI | [email protected] 10:53 AM EDT, April 6, 2009
A Southwest Airlines flight departing Long Island-MacArthur Airport was forced to make an emergency return to the airport Monday after experiencing "a mechanical problem," a Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman said.
No one is believed to have been injured, officials said.
It is unclear how many passengers and crew were aboard Flight 195, which departed MacArthur at 9:45 a.m. bound for Fort Myers, Fla.
There were reports that the Boeing 737 jet had been struck by lightning, but FAA officials said that those reports are unconfirmed and that they do not know the origin of those reports.
One FAA spokeswoman told Newsday that controllers at the New York TRACON center - the control center for flights into and out of MacArthur - had no reports of a lightning strike, though thunderstorms were in the area at the time.
Officials told Newsday the pilot reported having "a mechanical problem" and said the plane is believed to have circled over the Atlantic, dumping excess fuel, before returning to MacArthur.

That's great everyone is ok but on a side note.. is it common to dump fuel in the ocean?

no...my understanding is that in an emergency landing it is sometimes necessary to dump fuel to avoid the plane going on fire...it a normal flight the plane would have used the fuel to get to its destination

Yes it is - otherwise a crash landing can turn into an even worse inferno.

Plus, the extra weight makes it harder to land.http://www.usatoday.com/travel/columnist/getline/2005-01-10-ask-the-captain_x.htm
Airplanes have to dump fuel because of landing weight requirements dictated by structural limitations of the aircraft or the length and condition of the runways. The difference between a takeoff weight and a landing weight can be as high as a hundred thousand pounds or more.
All that extra weight (especially since they used almost none of it in flight) would increase the landing distance, and possibly damage the plane (more than it already is).

Re: McArthur Airport...
Oh thank God everyone is OK.
In an emergency situation, when the plane is loaded with fuel, the biggest hazard can be the fire that might erupt when they have to land in an emergency. Also, it can weigh the plane down making it harder to land. Planes, when they land normally, have used their fuel during flight -- so, if you are forced to land right after take-off then it is safest to dump fuel. I know it stinks but it has to be done.
They say you are most likely to die during take-off and it is only because the plane is LOADED with fuel so if anything happens the whole plane can go on fire so easily... The same goes with landing - you are most likely to live because the plane is so low on fuel... if you can survive the impact/crash, then you stand a good chance because most likely the plane won't be an inferno.
I'm terrified of flying so I researched plane disasters a lot -- the more I know, the better I feel lol don't ask how THAT way of thinking helps!
So glad everyone's OK!!! I would have DIED!!!!!!!!

Wow.... Glad it's back safely landed!
And dumping jet fuel in the ocean?? I guess its an emergency precaution that would be better than not doing it. Jet fuel is highly volatile too, so it will quickly evaporate in any case.

I'm guessing there are 3 main options: 1)Don't dump, and increase the risk of crashing and exploding. 2)Dump in the ocean, where there is a minimal amount of flammable stuff. 3)Dump over land, where almost everything is flammable.
I'd choose #2....
