Mattress...where to start?

We need a new mattress and I don't even know where to start. I don't need top of the line but I don't want a crappy one either...something middle of the road. What should I look for and who has the best prices?

We happen to LOVE the "bob-o-pedic". very similar to the expensive tempurpedic but MUCH more affordable!

We have the same one and also love it.

I would definitely check out some of the spring-mattress alternatives, just to see what you think about them. Sleep Number and memory foam mattresses are very popular.

Also, figure out if you prefer soft or firm mattresses, and if you and DH like the same type. I know the Sleep Number and the Bob-o-pedic mattresses can be split in half so one side is firmer than the other, so if you and DH like different firmness, you can still have that, and still be in the same bed.

We currently have the sleep number bed and I hate it, HATE it. The two sides thing seems like a great idea but the two different sides are two air mattresses and there is a gap between the two that you roll into and it's killing my back to the point where it hurts to stand for too long. Worst bed EVER.

Re: Mattress...where to start?

we tried the bob-o-pedic, and really liked it in the store.

but ended up returning it 3 weeks later. we are definitely inner-spring people.

went to sleepy's, and while the sales people can be a touch pushy, we were shown all of our options that fit our sleep patters & wallet.

we ended up going to a couple of sleepys, and went with the nicest salesperson who gave us the best deal.

macys is good too.

agree with this poster. also remember the prices are negotiable.

definately try out a few different beds and see what you like. Also, remember those that are pillow tops and euro tops will show body impressions soooner than "tight tops"

We got the Waldorf Astoria mattress. It was VERY expensive but worth every penny. It's guaranteed for 10 years.

Re: Mattress...where to start?

You can always try a larger dept. store like Macys and really take a look at their prices. If you have that stores credit card, they usually offer interest free payment plans.
You can also check Raymour & Flanagan, they also have mattresses, its where we got ours.

Re: Mattress...where to start?

We got our pillow top at Sleepy's about 5 years ago and still LOVE it. It's the most comfortable thing ever. The sales person tested me and DH to see whether a soft or hard mattress was better for each of us and then based it on that. They also gave us a great payment plan. Great purchase all around.

Re: Mattress...where to start?

If you can wait a few months, we got a great deal last year at Macy's 4th of July sale. We got a $2000 mattress for about $600.
