math gurus help me please

I'm having a brain fart.

I have to back into a number. If I have a number, say $5.00 and that represents a 6% discount..how do I back into the original number..I don't have the original charge and I need to come up with it this way.

Also, if you could provide the excel formula that would be helpful.

$5.00/X = 94/100
cross multiply to find x

ETA: I did it meaning $5.00 was AFTER a 6% discount, and you wanted the amount before discount. Did I interpret your question correctly?

is/of = %/100

And you cross multiply

so

$5 is 6% of $x
where xis the unknown quantity

5/x=6/100


5x100=6x
500=6x
x=83.33

Formula is:
the % discount = Z
the $ amount of the discount = Y
The $ amount before discount = X

X=y/z

In your case, 6% = .06 (or Z)
$5 = the amount of the discount (or Y)
X= 5/.06
x= $83.33
